4 Cook, R. M. GREEK PAINTED POTTERY
Routledge 1997 0415138604 / 9780415138604 Third Revised Edition Softcover Very Good
Very Light edgwear. Light creasing to bottom front corner of wraps. ; 408 pages; Greek Painted Pottery has been used by classics and classical archaeology students for some thirty years. It thoroughly examines all painted pottery styles from the Protogeometric to the Hellenistic period from all areas of Greece and from the colonies in parts of Italy. In each case it covers the development of iconography and the use of colour, decorative motifs and the distinctive styles of each stage. It examines the most utilitarian pottery objects as well as some of the finest pieces produced by a flourishing civilisation. Other chapters cover the pottery industry and pottery-making techniques, including firing, the types of local clay which were used and inscription. This study also considers how one can date pottery and establish a chronology and the various methods by which these artefacts have been classified, preserved and collected. This is the third edition of this classic text, which has been extensively revised and includes a fully updated bibliography. This edition also includes coverage of new evidence and new theories which have surfaced since the book was last revised in 1972. With over 100 black and white photographs and plentiful line drawings, the new edition of this comprehensive text will be invaluable to students studying classical art, archaeology and art history.

9 Erickson, Brice L. CRETE IN TRANSITION Pottery Styles and Island History in the Archaic and Classical Periods
American School of Classical Studies at Athens 2010 0876615450 / 9780876615454 Softcover Fine
Hesperia Supplement, No. 45; 380 pages; This work presents a classification system and absolute chronology for black-gloss wares from Crete, establishing the first local and regional ceramic sequences during the period from 600 to 400 B.C. This new chronological foundation of datable pottery from excavated sites fills in the so-called 6th/5th-century gap and dispels the prevailing view that this was a period of decline in population and one of artistic and cultural impoverishment. The 6th century heralded important changes in Cretan society, reflected in the reorganization of burial grounds, new patterns of sanctuary dedication, and the circulation of exotica among the elite. The study reveals unsuspected connections with mainland Greece, especially Sparta and Athens. Historians and archaeologists will find the author's conclusions, and their implications, to be of considerable interest.

17 Hayes, John W. THE ATHENIAN AGORA. VOLUME XXXII: ROMAN POTTERY Fine-Ware Imports
American School of Classical Studies 2008 087661232X / 9780876612323 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Book is like new. Still wrapped in plastic. ; Examples of Roman period red-gloss and red-slip pottery (terra sigillata) found during excavations in the Athenian Agora form the focus of this volume. These fine wares, like the other table wares of the first seven centuries A. D. Discussed here, were all imported--a very different situation to earlier periods where Athens was known as a great ceramic-making center, and perhaps the result of mass destruction of potters' workshops during the Sullan sack of 86 B. C. While the image of a demolished pottery industry is tragic, the consequent conglomeration of fine-wares from many parts of the Roman empire in one city makes the Athenian Agora a tremendous source of comparanda for archaeologists working all round the Mediterranean. Written by the world's leading expert on Roman pottery, this huge catalogue illustrating and identifying multiple shapes and types of decoration will therefore be an essential reference book.; The Athenian Agora. Volume XXXII; Vol. 32; 12.1 X 9.2 X 1.3 inches; 386 pages

American School of Classical Studies At Athens 1943 Hardcover Very Good- with no dust jacket
Light pencil marginalia to about 6 pages and very light ink to about 3 pages. Spine is somewhat discolored. Corners and spine ends are a little edgeworn. Oversized. Scholar's name (T. J. Dunbabin) on ffep. ; 45 plates at end. ; Corinth Volume VII, Part I; 104 pages; The fifth part of the Corinth volume dedicated to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore publishes the large-scale terracotta sculpture found in the sanctuary. Ranging in date from the late 7th through the 4th century B.C., the sculpture consists of fragments from 132 to as many as 147 statues, from half- to nearly life-size. These are, for the most part, statues of young males, both draped and nude, although females and seated infants appear as well. Several introductory chapters discuss the types represented, the findspots and possible original placement of the sculptures, and the techniques involved in their construction. This volume greatly expands our knowledge of the history of Corinth, broadening our understanding both of cult practices at the site and of the manufacture of terracotta sculpture.
