8 Euripides; John Wilkins EURIPIDES: HERACLIDAE With Introduction and Commentary
Oxford Clarendon Press 1993 0198147589 / 9780198147589 Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and circulation page. Light bumping to corners. ; 240 pages; This edition and commentary provides an invaluable introduction to one of Euripides' less well-known plays, and describes the enormous value of the text for our understanding of Athenian drama, religion, and society. Heraclidae is one of Euripides' "alphabetical" plays, preserved exclusively in a Laurentian manuscript, and therefore not selected in antiquity. Not even in modern times, despite the excellent commentaries of Elmsley (1821) and Pearson (1907) , and powerful articles by Wilamwitz, has the play been given the prominence it deserves. This edition interprets the play in a wide cultural setting, considering unorthodox aspects of the structure of the drama, but placing particular emphasis on the cults and myths of Heracles in Attica, on his apotheosis and marriage, on his association with the young, and most of all on the two most striking rituals in the play: the voluntary self-sacrifice of the daughter of Heracles, and the conversion of Eurystheus from an enemy of Athens to a hero whose dead body will protect the city-state. The text is James Diggle's (Oxford Classical Texts 1984).

Light bump to 1 corner. Scholar's name to ffep (Philippa Goold née Forder). Pages tanned. ; 119 pages; Examining the revolution wrought by Catullus in Latin poetry, this volume encapsulates the way in which principles of modern literary criticism could be applied to classical poetry, without ditching the sound philological scholarship of the classical tradition. In its day this book led the way in showing the philogically trained student how to be a critic; equally it can show the critically trained student the importance of a sound philogical base today

Others are concerned with problems of third- and second-century Roman history. Eight papers treat the antecedents of so-called 'tragic history', speeches in ancient historians, and several aspects of Polybius' work. Finally, the selection includes Professor Walbank's detailed discussion of the chronology of Ptolemy IV's death and the accession of Ptolemy Epiphanes.
