53 Drake, H. A. CONSTANTINE AND THE BISHOPS The Politics of Intolerance
The Johns Hopkins University Press 2000 0801862183 / 9780801862182 Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Light Bumping to bottom of spine. ; Ancient Society and History; 1.68 x 8.76 x 8.78 Inches; 632 pages; Historians who viewed imperial Rome in terms of a conflict between pagans and Christians have often regarded the emperor Constantine's conversion as the triumph of Christianity over paganism. But in Constantine and the Bishops, historian H. A. Drake offers a fresh and more nuanced understanding of Constantine's rule and, especially, of his relations with Christians. Constantine, Drake suggests, was looking not only for a god in whom to believe but also a policy he could adopt. Uncovering the political motivations behind Constantine's policies, Drake shows how those policies were constructed to ensure the stability of the empire and fulfill Constantine's imperial duty in securing the favor of heaven. Despite the emperor's conversion to Christianity, Drake concludes, Rome remained a world filled with gods and with men seeking to depose rivals from power. A book for students and scholars of ancient history and religion, Constantine and the Bishops shows how Christian belief motivated and gave shape to imperial rule.

55 Drijvers, Jan Willem & John W. Watt PORTRAITS OF SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY Religious Power in Early Christianity, Byzantium and the Christian Orient
Brill Academic Publishers 1999 9004114599 / 9789004114593 Hardcover Fine in Good dust jacket
Top of front panel of dustjacket has tear at corner (1") and creasing along with chipping at head of spine. ; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World; 0.7 x 9.5 x 6.3 Inches; 227 pages; This volume deals with several figures of spiritual authority in Christianity during late antiquity and the early middle ages, and seeks to illuminate the way in which the struggle for religious influence evolved with changes in church and society. A number of literary portraits are examined, portraits which, in various literary genres, are themselves designed to establish and propagate the authority of the people whose lives and activities they describe. The sequence begins with visionary and prophetic figures of the second and third centuries, proceeds through several testimonies from the fourth century to the power of holy persons, moves on to Syriac portraits of the fifth to seventh centuries, and ends with the demise of the authority of the holy man in the eighth.

60 Engels, David & Peter Van Nuffelen RELIGION AND COMPETITION IN ANTIQUITY
Éditions Latomus 2014 2870312903 / 9782870312902 Softcover Near Fine
Small chip to base of spine. Else fine. ; The notion of competition has become crucial to our understanding of Greek and Roman religion and is often invoked to explain religous changes and to describe the relationship between various cults. This volume seeks to raise our awareness of what the notion implies and to test its use for the analysis of ancient religions. The papers range from Classical Greece, Hellenistic Babylon, Rome and the Etruscans, to Late Antiquity and the rise of Islam. They seek to determine how much can be gained in each individual case by understanding religious interaction in terms of rivalry and competition. In doing so, the volume hopes to open a more explicit debate on the analytical tools with which ancient religion is currently being studied. Contents: 1. Religion and Competition in Antiquity. An Introduction. David Engels / Peter Van Nuffelen: Religious Rivalry in Seleucid Babylonia. Marduk of Babylon versus Anu of Uruk. Tom Boiy: p. 45 3. Oracles and Oracle-Sellers. 69 Fear, Andrew & José Fernández Urbiña & Mar Marcos Sanchez (Eds) THE ROLE OF THE BISHOP IN LATE ANTIQUITY Conflict and Compromise
Bloomsbury Academic 2013 1780932170 / 9781780932170 Hardcover Near Fine with no dust jacket
Decorative boards. Very light shelfwear else fine. ; Late Antiquity witnessed a major transformation in the authority and power of the Episcopate within the Church, with the result that bishops came to embody the essence of Christianity and increasingly overshadow the leading Christian laity. The rise of Episcopal power came in a period in which drastic political changes produced long and significant conflicts both within and outside the Church. This book examines these problems in depth, looking at bishops' varied roles in both causing and resolving these disputes, including those internal to the church, those which began within the church but had major effects on wider society, and those of a secular nature. ; 280 pages

Tauris Academic Studies 2010 1848854099 / 9781848854093 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
A couple of tiny dots to textblock (as published? ). Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. ; Library of Classical Studies; 320 pages; Late Antiquity, the period of transition from the crisis of Roman Empire in the third century to the Middle Ages, has traditionally been considered only in terms of the "decline" from classical standards. Recent classical scholarship strives to consider this period on its own terms. Taking the reign of Constantine the Great as its starting point, this book examines the unique intersection of rhetoric, religion and politics in Late Antiquity. Expert scholars come together to examine ancient rhetorical texts to explore the ways in which late antique authors drew upon classical traditions, presenting Roman and post-Roman religious and political institutions in order to establish a desired image of a "new era." This book provides new insights into how the post-Roman Germanic West, Byzantine East and Muslim South appropriated and transformed the political, intellectual and cultural legacy inherited from the late Roman Empire and its borderlands.

84 Glancy, Jennifer A. SLAVERY IN EARLY CHRISTIANITY
Oxford University Press 2002 0195136098 / 9780195136098 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
DJ in mylar; Slavery was widespread throughout the Mediterranean lands where Christianity was born and developed. Though Christians were both slaves and slaveholders, there has been surprisingly little study of what early Christians thought about the realities of slavery. How did they reconcile slavery with the Gospel teachings of brotherhood and charity? Slaves were considered the sexual property of their owners: what was the status within the Church of enslaved women and young male slaves who were their owners' sexual playthings? Is there any reason to believe that Christians shied away from the use of corporal punishments so common among ancient slave owners? Jennifer A. Glancy brings a multilayered approach to these and many other issues, offering a comprehensive re-examination of the evidence pertaining to slavery in early Christianity. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, Glancy situates early Christian slavery in its broader cultural setting. She argues that scholars have consistently underestimated the pervasive impact of slavery on the institutional structures, ideologies, and practices of the early churches and of individual Christians. The churches, she shows, grew to maturity with the assumption that slaveholding was the norm, and welcomed both slaves and slaveholders as members. Glancy draws attention to the importance of the body in the thought and practice of ancient slavery. To be a slave was to be a body subject to coercion and violation, with no rights to corporeal integrity or privacy. Even early Christians who held that true slavery was spiritual in nature relied, ultimately, on bodily metaphors to express this. Slavery, Glancy demonstrates, was an essential feature of both the physical and metaphysical worlds of early Christianity. ; 203 pages
