453 Lloyd, G. E. R. ARISTOTLE The Growth and Structure of His Thought
Cambridge University Press 1973 0521094569 / 9780521094566 Softcover Good+
Pencilling to a few pages. A bit of colour loss to wraps. . Some sticker damage to lower corner of front wrap. ; 340 pages; Dr Lloyd writes for those who want to discover and explore Aristotle's work for themselves. He acts as mediator between Aristotle and the modern reader. The book is divided into two parts. The first tells the story of Aristotle's intellectual development as far as it can be reconstructed; the second presents the fundamentals of his thought in the main fields of inquiry which interested him: logic and metaphysics, physics, psychology, ethics, politics, and literary criticism. The final chapter considers the unity and coherence of Aristotle's philosophy, and records briefly his later influence on European thought. This is a concise and lucid account of the work of a difficult and profound thinker. Dr Lloyd's business is only with the essentials; but he does not shirk the difficulties which arise in their interpretation, nor does he invest Aristotle with a spurious modernity.

460 Long, Christopher P. ARISTOTLE ON THE NATURE OF TRUTH
Cambridge University Press 2011 0521191211 / 9780521191210 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
292 pages; This book reconsiders the traditional correspondence theory of truth, which takes truth to be a matter of correctly representing objects. Drawing Heideggerian phenomenology into dialogue with American pragmatic naturalism, Christopher P. Long undertakes a rigorous reading of Aristotle that articulates the meaning of truth as a cooperative activity between human beings and the natural world that is rooted in our endeavors to do justice to the nature of things. By following a path of Aristotle's thinking that leads from our rudimentary encounters with things in perceiving through human communication to thinking, this book traces an itinerary that uncovers the nature of truth as ecological justice, and it finds the nature of justice in our attempts to articulate the truth of things.

Cambridge University Press 1971 0521081424 / 9780521081429 Hardcover Very Good- with no dust jacket
Scholar's blindstamp and name to ffep (Robert Brown). Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (Robert Brown). Minor fraying to extremities of cloth. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The De Rerum Natura of Lucretius is a sustained and impassioned protest against religious superstition and irrationality. The poem takes the form of a detailed exposition of Epicurean physical theory - an extreme materialism designed to remove and discredit popular fears of the gods, death and an afterlife. Book III is generally accepted to be the finest in the whole poem; Lucretius argues there that the soul is as mortal as the body and shows that human response to the fact of mortality and death can be at once rational, dignified and liberating. Professor Kenney's commentary is the first to give proper critical emphasis to the techniques and intentions of Lucretius' poetry; it can be read with profit by all students of Latin from senior school level upwards.

492 Lutz, Mark J. DIVINE LAW AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY IN PLATO'S LAWS
Northern Illinois University Press 2012 0875804454 / 9780875804453 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
200pp. All over the world secular rationalist governments and judicial authorities have been challenged by increasingly forceful claims made on behalf of divine law. For those who believe that reason—not faith—should be the basis of politics and the law, proponents of divine law raise theoretical and practical concerns that must be addressed seriously and respectfully. As Mark J. Lutz makes plain in this illuminating book, they have an important ally in Plato, whose long neglected Laws provides an eye-opening analysis of the relation between political philosophy and religion and a powerful defense of political rationalism. Plato mounts his case, Lutz reveals, through a productive dialogue between his Athenian Stranger and various devout citizens that begins by exploring the common ground between them, but ultimately establishes the authority of rational political philosophy to guide the law. The result will fascinate not only political theorists but also scholars at all levels with an interest in the intersection of religion and politics or in the questions that surround ethics and civic education. ; 210 pages

498 Marcovich, M. ; Clement Of Alexandria CLEMENTIS ALEXANDRINI PROTREPTICUS
Brill Academic Publishers 1995 9004104496 / 9789004104495 Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Minor bump to top corners. ; Vigiliae Christianae, Supplements , No 34; 0.85 x 9.64 x 6.38 Inches; 240 pages; Clement of Alexandria (ca A.D. 150-215) is one of the leading Church Fathers and the first Christian philosopher. His early Protrepticus is of great significance for Patristics, Classical scholarship, Greek philosophy and religion. The treatise is preserved virtually in a single manuscript --the famous Codex Arethae, Parisinus graecus 451, copied in 913-914,-- which proves to be lacunose, corrupt, interpolated and dislocated. The only critical edition of the Protrepticus was prepared back in 1905 by Otto Stahlin (G.C.S., Volume 12). The present edition is based on a thorough in-depth study of the Parisinus, on the inclusion of the entire opus of Clement, on an extended and updated Quellenforschung, and finally, on a more sensitive approach to meaning and textual criticism. The edition includes the Scholia.
