414 Keaney, John J. THE COMPOSITION OF ARISTOTLE'S ATHENAION POLITEIA Observation and Explanation
Oxford University Press 1992 0195070321 / 9780195070323 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Book is fine. DJ has light shelfwear. ; Xii, 191pp. Discovered one hundred years ago, Aristotle's Athenaion Politeia is invaluable to contemporary understanding of Athenian democracy. As a historical record, however, it has been found to be so unreliable that some have questioned its true authorship, and it has remained largely ignored by those studying philosophy and literature. Keaney uses a literary approach to reassert Aristotle's authorship and to present the Athenaion Politeia as a document that defies the constraints of any particular genre--probably never intended to be a piece of historical writing. He goes beyond the traditional approach of historical analysis to consider the work as characteristic of a new and innovative genre created by Aristotle, that of empirically-based cultural history. ; 191 pages

416 Kechagia, Eleni PLUTARCH AGAINST COLOTES A Lesson in History of Philosophy
Oxford University Press 2011 0199597235 / 9780199597239 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Oxford Classical Monographs; 384 pages; Plutarch of Chaeroneia's philosophical work remained largely in the shadow of his celebrated Lives, partly because it was often dubbed 'popular philosophy', and partly because it was thought to be lacking in originality. The tides are, fortunately, changing and current scholarship is showing a growing appreciation of Plutarch's philosophical work. This book contributes to the 'rehabilitation' of Plutarch as a philosopher by focusing on an important aspect of his philosophical self: his work as a teacher, interpreter, and, eventually, historian of philosophy. Eleni Kechagia offers a critical analysis of Plutarch's anti-Epicurean treatise Against Colotes - a unique text that is both rich in philosophical material and has been widely used as a source for ancient Greek philosophy, but which has yet to be studied in its own right. Combining a historical approach with structural analysis and close reading of selected sections of the text, this book demonstrates that Plutarch engaged with the philosophy of his past in a creative way. By refuting Colotes' Epicurean arguments against the main Greek philosophers up to the Hellenistic era, Plutarch gives an insightful critical assessment of the philosophy of his past and teaches his readers how to go about living and reading philosophy. The volume concludes that Plutarch emerges as a respected critic whose 'reviews' of the past philosophical theories are an essential companion when trying to piece together the puzzle of ancient Greek philosophy.

422 Klotz, Frieda & Katerina Oikonomopoulou (Eds. ) THE PHILOSOPHER'S BANQUET Plutarch's Table Talk in the Intellectual Culture of the Roman Empire
Oxford University Press 2011 0199588953 / 9780199588954 Hardcover Very Good+ in Fine dust jacket
Upper corners bumped else fine. ; 288 pages; The Philosopher's Banquet is the first sustained study of Plutarch's Table Talk, a Greek prose text which is a combination of philosophical dialogue (in the style of Plato's Symposium) and miscellany. The form of Table Talk was imitated by several later Greek and Roman imperial authors (such as Aulus Gellius, Athenaeus, and Macrobius) , making it a vital part of the early Roman Empire's literary and cultural history. Similarly, the great variety of its contents links it with a broader imperial cultural trend, that of systematizing knowledge, which features increasingly prominently as a subject of scholarly study in both classics and the history of science. The contributors to The Philosopher's Banquet offer a range of methodologically innovative and sophisticated readings of Table Talk's literary form, themes, cultural background, and influence.

Brill Academic Publishers 2008 9004162895 / 9789004162891 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Unwrapped in Plastic. ; In German; Studien Und Texte Zur Geistesgeschichte Des Mittelalters; 2.46 x 9.62 x 6.66 Inches; 986 pages; This monograph deals with the philosophical approach of thirteenth-century masters to concrete, practical manifestations of 'quantum ad naturalia' in human lives in their commentaries on Aristotle’s works on natural philosophy, both his genuine works and those then considered genuine. It inquires into what they deemed worthy of philosophical debate regarding this topic and how they tackled it. The first of the two volumes describes the cultural surroundings, the scholars’ way of approaching the topic, and their discourses on the peculiarity (singularity, unity, consistency) of humankind and on its internal differentiation according to gender, stage of life, social stratification, and differences due to ethnic status or geographic (climatic) diversity. This is the first comprehensive source-based study of the subject; it draws heavily on unedited texts.

427 Kouremenos, Theokritos HEAVENLY STUFF The Constitution of the Celestial Objects and the Theory of Homocentric Spheres in Aristotle's Cosmology
Franz Steiner Verlag 2010 3515097333 / 9783515097338 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Palingenesia 96; 150 pages; This book offers a reappraisal of basic aspects of Aristotelian cosmology. Aristotle believed that all celestial objects consisted of the same substance that pervade the heavens, a stuff unlike those found near the center of the cosmos that compose us and everything in our immediate surroundings. Kouremenos argues that, contrary to the received view, Aristotle originally introduced this heavenly stuff as the matter of the stars alone, the remotest celestial objects from the Earth, and as filler of the outermost part of the heavens, forming a diurnally rotating spherical shell whose fixed parts are the stars, the crust of the cosmos which has the Earth at its center. The author also argues that, contrary to another common view, at no point in the development of his cosmological thought did Aristotle believe the heavens to be structured according to the theory of homocentric spheres developed by his older contemporary Eudoxus of Cnidus, in which the other celestial objects, the five planets known in antiquity, the Sun and the Moon, were hypothesized to move uniformly in circles, as if they were fixed stars.

428 Kraut, Richard (Ed. ) THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO PLATO
Cambridge University Press 1993 0521436109 / 9780521436106 Paperback Very Good
Foxing to textblock. Minor shelfwear. ; Cambridge Companions to Philosophy; 578 pages; Plato stands as the fount of our philosophical tradition, being the first Western thinker to produce a body of writing that touches upon a wide range of topics still discussed by philosophers today. In a sense he invented philosophy as a distinct subject, for although many of these topics were discussed by his intellectual predecessors and contemporaries, he was the first to bring them together by giving them a unitary treatment. This volume contains fourteen new essays discussing Plato's views about knowledge, reality, mathematics, politics, ethics, love, poetry, and religion. There are also analyses of the intellectual and social background of his thought, the development of his philosophy throughout his career, the range of alternative approaches to his work, and the stylometry of his writing.

430 Kronenberg, Leah ALLEGORIES OF FARMING FROM GREECE AND ROME Philosophical Satire in Xenophon, Varro, and Virgil
Cambridge University Press 2009 0521517265 / 9780521517263 Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Very light bumping to bottom corners else Fine. ; 236 pages; In this book Professor Kronenberg shows that Xenophon's Oeconomicus, Varro's De Re Rustica and Virgil's Georgics are not simply works on farming but belong to a tradition of philosophical satire which uses allegory and irony to question the meaning of morality. These works metaphorically connect farming and its related arts to political life; but instead of presenting farming in its traditional guise as a positive symbol, they use it to model the deficiencies of the active life, which in turn is juxtaposed to a preferred contemplative way of life. Although these three texts are not usually treated together, this book convincingly connects them with an original and provocative interpretation of their allegorical use of farming. It also fills an important gap in our understanding of the literary influences on the Georgics by showing that it is shaped not just by its poetic predecessors but by philosophical dialogue.

Franz Steiner Verlag 2010 3515096337 / 9783515096331 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Philosophie Der Antike (Pha) Band 30; 189 pages; English summary: The focus by individual ancient (or modern) authors in various fields (law, philosophy, science, theology, literature) on how to use the concept of natural law led to biases that this volume wants to help overcome through a preview of the 'historical depth' of the concept. Its particular charm lies in the fact that its two components (Nature and Law) stand in strong tension with each other, which to the present day does not appear to be fully resolved. While in the classical Greek philosophy of Plato and Aristotle the world is not reduced to an intentional act of creation, the introduction of the concept of natural law by the Stoics and its absorption by Christian writers develops the idea of a divine order underlying natural order. Its challenge by modern science has led to an unresolved uncertainty about ethical and social standards. German text.

440 Lampe, Kurt THE BIRTH OF HEDONISM The Cyrenaic Philosophers and Pleasure As a Way of Life
Princeton University Press 2014 0691161135 / 9780691161136 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
According to Xenophon, Socrates tried to persuade his associate Aristippus to moderate his excessive indulgence in wine, women, and food, arguing that only hard work can bring happiness. Aristippus wasn't convinced. Instead, he and his followers espoused the most radical form of hedonism in ancient Western philosophy. Before the rise of the better known but comparatively ascetic Epicureans, the Cyrenaics pursued a way of life in which moments of pleasure, particularly bodily pleasure, held the highest value. In The Birth of Hedonism, Kurt Lampe provides the most comprehensive account in any language of Cyrenaic ideas and behavior, revolutionizing the understanding of this neglected but important school of philosophy. The Birth of Hedonism thoroughly and sympathetically reconstructs the doctrines and practices of the Cyrenaics, who were active between the fourth and third centuries BCE. The book examines not only Aristippus and the mainstream Cyrenaics, but also Hegesias, Anniceris, and Theodorus. Contrary to recent scholarship, the book shows that the Cyrenaics, despite giving primary value to discrete pleasurable experiences, accepted the dominant Greek philosophical belief that life-long happiness and the virtues that sustain it are the principal concerns of ethics. The book also offers the first in-depth effort to understand Theodorus's atheism and Hegesias's pessimism, both of which are extremely unusual in ancient Greek philosophy and which raise the interesting question of hedonism's relationship to pessimism and atheism. Finally, the book explores the "new Cyrenaicism" of the nineteenth-century writer and classicist Walter Pater, who drew out the enduring philosophical interest of Cyrenaic hedonism more than any other modern thinker. ; 304 pages

445 Lehoux, Daryn & A. D. Morrison & Alison Sharrock (Eds. ) LUCRETIUS: Poetry, Philosophy, Science
Oxford University Press 2013 0199605408 / 9780199605408 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket
Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else book is fine. Light wear to DJ. ; Lucretius' didactic masterpiece De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things) is one of the most brilliant and powerful poems in the Latin language, a passionate attempt at dispelling humanity's fear of death and its enslavement by false beliefs about the gods, and a detailed exposition of Epicurean atomist physics. For centuries, it has raised the question of whether it is primarily a poem or primarily a philosophical treatise, which also presents scientific doctrine. The current volume seeks to unite the three disciplinary aspects -- poetry, philosophy, and science -- in order to offer a holistic response to an important monument in cultural history. With ten original essays and an analytical introduction, the volume aims not only to combine different approaches within single covers, but to offer responses to the poem by experts from all three scholarly backgrounds. Philosophers and scholars of ancient science look closely at the artistic placement of individual words, while literary critics explore ethical matters and the contribution of Lucretius' poetry to the argument of the poem. Topics covered include death and grief, evolution and the cosmos, ethics and politics, perception, and epistemology. ; 336 pages

450 Lisi, Francisco L. (Ed. ) PLATO'S LAWS AND ITS HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Selected Papers of the I International Congress on Ancient Thought, Salamanca, 1998
Academia 2001 3896651153 / 9783896651150 Hardcover Near Fine with no dust jacket
Very minor shelfwear else fine. Gift inscription to classics scholar on ffep: "with best wishes to my friend and colleague, Christopher Rowe. Madrid. 23/2/01" ; 351 pages; Of all of Plato's dialogues the Laws was the most related to the social and political circumstances of the time and was more influential as theoretical writing on the politics of every subsequent epoch than his other major work on the subject, the Republic. For modern democracy, some of the theoretical principles that were exposed for the first time in the Laws are fundamental: the rule of law, the check and balance of power, etc. The understanding of the largest work written by Plato has substantially improved in the last decades thanks to increasing research. This selection from the papers tries to offer a panoramic vision of the work, which is being done at present in the main fields by well known scholars like T. J. Saunders, L. Brisson, Kl. Schöpsdau, A. Neschke, Chr. Bobonich, Sl. Dusanic and others. The first set of contributions is related to the new notion of law which Plato shapes in the Laws and its connection to the dialogue as genre. The reader will also find a set of papers devoted to the relationship between virtue and state, the nature of the state, and the metaphysics. The section devoted to the specific organisation of the Magnesian State offers papers that investigate the Magnesian economy (in its modern sense) , the nocturnal council, the laws about sexuality and the position of the slaves. The section devoted to the relationship of the Laws to its historical context contains contributions which try to explain the impact of the ideological and historical situation on the work and its possible influence on the political circumstances of the time. Two papers analyse the influences of the Laws on the Neoplatonic philosophy and in John Locke. Finally the textual tradition of the dialogue is considered.
