401 Olsson, Kurt JOHN GOWER AND THE STRUCTURES OF CONVERSION A Reading of the Confessio Amantis
D. S. Brewer 1992 0859913147 / 9780859913140 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket
No d/w, outline of sticker on front cover, otherwise Fine. ; This book examines the significance of John Gower's re-creations of the cultural past in the Confessio Amantis through the stories and teachings of the confessor, Genius. Although the poem has many of the attributes of a compilation, Gower reforms material to create a range of `wise' responses to important moral questions, intended to sharpen his readers' judgment and nurture their capacity to deal with the uncertainties of the moral life. Olsson analyses the poet's conversions of old to new as an effort to inspire the moral renewal of the age. He contends that the poet sees the past as the key to the regeneration of the world. In this reading, the past, an ever-new and renewable repository of wisdom, also holds a promise for Amans, who learns that he is an old man unfit to serve in Venus's court. Thus the author perceives Gower to offer a strong, responsive and balanced moral vision to an age seemingly victimised by change. KURT OLSSON is Professor of English at the University of Idaho; this, his first book, was awarded the prestigious Fisher Prize. ; Publications of the John Gower Society; 9.75 x 1.25 x 6.5 Inches; 275 pages

402 Olster, David Michael ROMAN DEFEAT, CHRISTIAN RESPONSE, AND THE LITERARY CONSTRUCTION OF THE JEW
University of Pennsylvania Press 1994 081223152X / 9780812231526 Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Minor creasing along top edge of DJ. ; Middle Ages Series; 203 pages; Demonstrates that writers of the seventh century accounted for the continuing collapse of the Roman Empire by attributing the Christian concepts of sin, punishment, repentance, and restoration to the imperial and historical dimension. Also argues that the flowering of anti-Jewish literature at the time did not reflect Christian-Jewish conflict, but was an attempt to construct a people whose greater misfortune could mitigate their own.

404 Owen, Gale R. RITES AND RELIGIONS OF THE ANGLO-SAXONS
David & Charles 1981 0715377590 / 9780715377598 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Corners are bumped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Book is clean and bright. ; Quoting from medieval sources and drawing on recent archaeological finds, this book traces the development of religious beliefs in Anglo-Saxon England, and of the influence of religion on everyday life. Anglo-Saxon literature is quoted both in Old English and in translation. Illustrations include Anglo-Saxon metalwork, carvings, manuscript illuminations and buildings. This particular book on Anglo-Saxon Heathenism is unique to my knowledge in that it extends its subject matter to all the religions known to have been practiced by the Anglo-Saxons, and thus discusses their practice of Catholic Christianity as well. It sets the stage for the arrival in Britain of the peoples who became the Anglo-Saxons by pointing out that Celtic and Greco-Roman Paganism, as well as Christianity (both the form which due mostly to political patronage eventually became the "catholic" i. E. "universal" form and various "heresies") predated in Britain the Germanic Heathenism brought in by the Anglo-Saxons. ; 208 pages

415 Penninger, Frieda Elaine CHAUCER'S TROILUS AND CRISEYDE AND THE KNIGHT'S TALE Fictions Used
University Press of America 1993 081919218X / 9780819192189 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. ; 0.55 x 8.5 x 5.59 Inches; 126 pages; This book examines "Troilus and Criseyde" and "The Knight's Tale" as poems which work the same plot to contrasting tragic and joyous endings but for the same purpose, of exploring the folly of electing the temporal world over the eternal. It demonstrates that the tragedy of "Troilus and Criseyde" is a consequence of the folly of relying on Fortune and temporal bliss and works through the pattern of a similar dependence in "The Knight's Tale." It then develops the portrayal of the protagonists of the poems as Fortune's Fools through a scrutiny of courtship as game of play, of "caritas" and "cupiditas" contrasted with the implications of pity, mercy, grace, and love as used in temporal contexts in the poem but defined theologically elsewhere in Chaucer, and of the limitations of knighthood and chivalry as defined by the world of the poems.

Gift inscription from author to ffep. ; Serta Graeca. Beiträge Zur Erforschung Griechischer Texte. Band 25; 244 pages; The lexicon "On syntax" has been preserved in one manuscript of the 10th century - in the precious codex Paris. Coisl. gr. 345. The lexicon was compiled between the end of 6th century and the beginning of 9th century. It is of interest on the one hand because of its 728 quotations, mostly from classical authors. On the other hand, it is an important witness in the Greek lexicographic tradition. The lexicon is an original work; no previous compilations have been incorporated. The present study represents its relations to the rest of the Greek syntactic lexicons, some of which have been transmitted in numerous manuscripts.; Signed by Author

Appears unread. Inner cover is date-stamped, otherwise as New condition. ; Where does a literary text originate and how is it formed? This book focuses on the author as the motivating agent of the text. It is conducted with reference to two texts from the end of the twelfth century in which the material selected by the author operates as the vehicle for the central ideas. The structure and amplification of the material bring the author's intention to the fore, clarifying and enhancing the initial conception of the work. Far from being a contrived and artificial framework, fiction is defined as a craft which organizes and glosses material, creating unity through authorial perspective. ; Studies in the Humanities: Literature-Politics-Society; Vol. 59

Oxford University Press 2003 0198134134 / 9780198134138 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket
Top of book is bumped otherwise minor shelfwear to extremities. Dustjacket has a few small nicks and tears along top edge. Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing. ; Winchester Studies, 4.III: the Anglo-Saxon Minsters of Winchester; 1.26 x 11.02 x 8.82 Inches; 300 pages; Property and Piety comprises an edition and translation, with extensive commentary, of thirty-three Anglo-Saxon and Norman documents relating to the topography and minsters of early medieval Winchester. These texts record the physical effects on the city of the foundation and expansion of the three neighbouring minsters, and also of the removal of the New Minster to Hyde in about 1110. They record political, religious, and cultural aspects of the tenth-century reform of Benedictine monasticism, of which Winchester was a leading centre. The splendid New Minster refoundation charter, composed by Bishop AEthelwold and granted by King Edgar in 966, is here translated for the first time. A full examination is also made of the old minster confirmation charter, probably fabricated in the reign of AEthelred. The volume also includes all Anglo-Saxon grants of land within Winchester and a reappraisal of the evidence for the beneficial hidation of the surrounding estate of Chilcomb. This volume is part of a three-book study in the Winchester Studies series of the Anglo-Saxon Minsters of Winchester, including 4.i, The Anglo-Saxon Minsters by Martin Biddle and Birthe Kjolbye-Biddle, and 4.ii, The Cult of St Swithun by Michael Lapidge.
