418 Beecroft, Alexander AUTHORSHIP AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN EARLY GREECE AND CHINA Patterns of Literary Circulation
Cambridge University Press 2010 0521194318 / 9780521194310 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
338 pages; In this book, Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece (Homeric epic and lyric) and China (the Canon of Songs) evolved from being local, oral, and anonymous to being textualized, interpreted, and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan, and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Confucius, and Sima Qian. Many of these anecdotes and narratives have long been rejected as spurious or motivated by naïve biographical criticism. Beecroft argues that these texts effectively negotiated the tensions between local and pan-cultural audiences. The figure of the author thus served as a catalyst to a sense of shared cultural identity in both the Greek and Chinese worlds. It also facilitated the emergence of both cultures as the bases for cosmopolitan world orders.

419 Belfiore, Elizabeth S. MURDER AMONG FRIENDS Violation of Philia in Greek Tragedy
Oxford University Press 2000 0195131495 / 9780195131499 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Former owner's name on ffep. Light bump to base of spine. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Modern scholars have followed Aristotle in noting the importance of philia (kinship or friendship) in Greek tragedy, especially the large number of plots in which kin harm or murder one another. More than half of the thirty-two extant tragedies focus on an act in which harm occurs or is about to occur among philoi who are blood kin. In contrast, Homeric epic tends to avoid the portrayal of harm to kin. It appears, then, that kin killing does not merely occur in what Aristotle calls the "best" Greek tragedies; rather, it is a characteristic of the genre as a whole. In Murder Among Friends, Elizabeth Belfiore supports this thesis with an in-depth examination of the crucial role of philia in Greek tragedy. Drawing on a wealth of evidence, she compares tragedy and epic, discusses the role of philia relationships within Greek literature and society, and analyzes in detail the pattern of violation of philia in five plays: Aeschylus' Suppliants, Sophocles' Philoctetes and Ajax, and Euripides' Iphigenia in Tauris and Andromache. Appendixes further document instances of violation of philia in all the extant tragedies as well as in the lost plays of the fifth and fourth centuries B. C. E. ; 304 pages

421 Benardete, Seth THE BOW AND THE LYRE A Platonic Reading of the Odyssey
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. 1996 0847683672 / 9780847683673 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Slight fading to DJ spine. ; In this exciting new interpretation of the "Odyssey", renowed scholar Seth Benardete suggests that Homer may have been the first to philosophize in a Platonic sense. He argues that the "Odyssey" concerns precisely the relation between philosophy and poetry and, more broadly, the rational and the irrational in human beings. In light of this possibility, Bernardete works back and forth from Homer to Plato to examine the relation between wisdom and justice and tries to recover an original understanding of philosophy that Plato, too, recovered by reflecting on the wisdom of the poet. At stake in his argument is no less than the history of philosophy and the ancient understanding of poetry. "The Bow and the Lyre" is a book that every classicist and historian of philosophy should have. ; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 194 pages

422 Benecke, E. F. M ANTIMACHUS OF COLOPHON AND THE POSITION OF WOMEN IN GREEK POETRY A Fragment Printed for the Use of Scholars
Bouma's Boekhuis 1970 9060880285 / 9789060880289 Hardcover Good with no dust jacket
Spine cover is split on one side and half of the other but still attached. Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. Rubbing to boards. Edgewear to corners. ; 256 pages; Antimachus of Colophon, Greek poet and grammarian, flourished about 400 BC. Scarcely anything is known of his life. His poetical efforts were not generally appreciated, although he received encouragement from his younger contemporary Plato (Plutarch, Lysander, 18). His chief works were: an epic Thebais, an account of the expedition of the Seven against Thebes and the war of the Epigoni; and an elegiac poem Lyde, so called from the poet's mistress, for whose death he endeavoured to find consolation telling stories from mythology of heroic disasters (Plutarch, Consul, ad Apoll. 9; Athenaeus xiii. 597). Antimachus was the founder of "learned" epic poetry, and the forerunner of the Alexandrian school, whose critics allotted him the next place to Homer. He also prepared a critical recension of the Homeric poems

443 Bing, Peter THE WELL-READ MUSE Present and Past in Callimachus and the Hellenistic Poets
Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 1988 3525251890 / 9783525251898 Softcover Very Good+ Signed by Author
Gift inscription from author on ffep. Rubbing in places to front panel of wraps (slight colour loss) else Fine. ; In this carefully argued and stimulating study, the author investigates the era in which the written work - the book - superseded the assumption of oral composition and performance. In this and in other respects, as this study demonstrates, Hellenistic poets saw themselves as now being part of a new world, remote from the great genres and achievements of the earlier literary tradition. That sense of distance from the past gave authors freedom to experiment. At the same time, it incited them to view their poetic heritage as something deserving intense scholarly study. The author examines one fundamental result of this attitude, the Hellenistic tendency toward learned allusion, and what this meant to a period pursuing a different literary approach. The Well-Read Muse concludes with an analysis of Callimachus' Hymn to Delos as a paradigmatic instance of the play between present and past, tradition and originality that typified the age. Here the author sheds important light on the poet's choice not to make Apollo his theme, as his models had, but to focus rather on the diminutive, slender island, through which the god of song was born. Accompanied by a new Introduction by the author and corrections to the text and notes, as well as by an extensive bibliography and indices of passages and subjects discussed, The Well-Read Muse provides an important understanding of this turning point in Greek poetical development. There was no escaping the new world of which these poets were a part: Peter Bing's impressive work examines the ways in which poets confronted this new reality. ; Hypomnemata ; Heft 90; 163 pages; Signed by Author

446 Blackwell, Thomas AN ENQUIRY INTO THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF HOMER (1736)
Georg Olms Hildesheim 1976 3487060027 / 9783487060026 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. ; Reprint of the 2nd edition; Anglistica & Americana; 1735. Blackwell, a Scottish classical scholar, first published this work anonymously. The work was intended to explain the causes of the superiority of Homer to all the poets who preceded or followed him. It shows considerable research, and contains many curious and interesting details, but its want of method made Bentley say that, when he had gone through half of it, he had forgotten the beginning, and, when he had finished the reading of it, he had forgotten the whole.
