404 Masters, Jamie POETRY AND CIVIL WAR IN LUCAN'S BELLUM CIVILE
Cambridge University Press 1992 0521414601 / 9780521414609 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Scholar's name to ffep (R. E. Fantham). Pencil marginalia and underlining to a few pages. DJ has minor shelfwear. ; This book is a major literary reevaluation of Lucan's epic poem, the Bellum Civile ("The Civil War"). Its main purpose is to bring out the implications of one basic premise: this poem is not only about civil war, but uses the metaphor of civil war (i. E. Self-destruction and internal discord) as the basis for the way it tells its story. Aimed primarily at classicists, the book offers a provocative new interpretation of most of the important issues in the poem, while attempting to avoid the glibness of generalization by concentrating on detailed readings of selected parts of the text.; Cambridge Classical Studies; 288 pages

410 McInerney, Jeremy THE FOLDS OF PARNASSOS Land and Ethnicity in Ancient Phokis
Austin, Texas, U.S.A. University of Texas Press 1999 029275230X / 9780292752306 Softcover Near Fine
Very faint crease to front wrap else fine. ; 391pp. Independent city-states (poleis) such as Athens have been viewed traditionally as the most advanced stage of state formation in ancient Greece. By contrast, this pioneering book argues that for some Greeks the ethnos, a regionally based ethnic group, and the koinon, or regional confederation, were equally valid units of social and political life and that these ethnic identities were astonishingly durable. Jeremy McInerney sets his study in Phokis, a region in central Greece dominated by Mount Parnassos that shared a border with the panhellenic sanctuary at Delphi. He explores how ecological conditions, land use, and external factors such as invasion contributed to the formation of a Phokian territory. Then, drawing on numerous interdisciplinary sources, he traces the history of the region from the Archaic age down to the Roman period. McInerney shows how shared myths, hero cults, and military alliances created an ethnic identity that held the region together over centuries, despite repeated invasions. He concludes that the Phokian koinon survived because it was founded ultimately on the tenacity of the smaller communities of Greece. ; 391 pages

414 Meister, Jan Bernhard DER KÖRPER DES PRINCEPS Zur Problematik Eines Monarchischen Körpers Ohne Monarchie
Franz Steiner Verlag 2012 3515100806 / 9783515100809 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
English summary: Bodies are not historical constants and their perception and their symbolic value can vary considerably. This is especially true for the early Roman Principate, when a monarchical body appeared with the emperor that moved in a supposedly republican society. While during the late Republican period the external appearance of Roman aristocrats, above all their clothing and public performance, were socially relevant, this traditional perception of the body was no longer pertinent to the body of the princeps. Because he did not appear overtly monarchical, his physical body, in the Republican period a widely held indicator of individuality, was meaningful in an entirely new way. Therefore the social and political changes led to new perceptions about what a body really is. ; Historia - Einzelschriften 223; 327 pages

427 Missiou, Anna THE SUBVERSIVE ORATORY OF ANDOKIDES Politics, Ideology and Decision-Making in Democratic Athens
Cambridge University Press 1992 0521360099 / 9780521360098 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Very faint shelfwear to DJ. ; Xi, 216pp. By analyzing a selection of speeches of the Athenian orator Andokides and the decisions reached by his audience on each occasion, Dr. Missiou demonstrates that the orator had divergent perceptions, values and attitudes from those of his audience on a number of basic issues. By this means she challenges the criticism, frequently aimed at Athenian democracy, that the decisions of the Assembly during this period were irresponsible and irrational. In particular she ascribes the rejection of Andokides' proposals for peace with the Spartans in 391 BC to the incompatability between the subversive character of his speech, aimed at spreading pro-Spartan and anti-war feelings, and the socio-political needs and demands of his audience. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 216 pages

429 Mitchell, Thomas N. CICERO: THE SENIOR STATESMAN
Yale University Press 1991 0300047797 / 9780300047790 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Faint stain to bottom of textblock. Bumping along lower edge of front board. Minor shelfwear overall to book and DJ. DJ has minor creasing and light edgewear. ; 360 pages; In this work, Mitchell brings to a conclusion his study of Cicero's political life and thought begun in "Cicero, the Ascending Years". This book spans the last 20 years of Cicero's life, from the end of his consulship in 63 BC to his death in 43 BC. Mitchell begins by discussing Cicero's political and social ideas and the extent to which they reflect the institutions of traditional republicanism. He then traces the reversal in Cicero's fortunes in the years after his consulship, describing his political isolation and his disillusionment with the conservative nobility. According to Mitchell, Cicero's inability to find a place or party seriously affected his political behaviour during this period. He was silent when Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus formed the First Triumvirate, defenseless when attacked and driven into exile, fearful and tentative in his political responses after his restoration, and reluctant when drawn into an alliance with the triumvirs. Eventually, after Caesar's assassination, Cicero seized a last hour of glory, assuming for a short time the role of preeminent "princeps". Mitchell shows that although Cicero made no lasting impact on the course of political events in his time, he ended his life defending the ideals to which he had remained steadfastly attached.

433 Moore, J. M. ARISTOTLE AND XENOPHON ON DEMOCRACY AND OLIGARCHY IN ANCIENT GREECE Translations with Introductions and Commentary.
Chatto & Windus 1975 0701122277 / 9780701122270 Softcover Good+
Some foxing to textblock. Rubbing to wraps. Creasing to spine. ; Contains: Aristotle's The Constitution of Athens; Xenophon's The Politeia of the Spartans; The Constitution of the Athenians ascribed to Xenophon the Orator; The Boeotian Constitution from the Oxyrhynchus Historian; 320 pages;
Three treatises survive from classical Greece under the loose title Politeiai (Constitutions) which are unique in character and indispensable to any student of the period. The longest and most important is Aristotle's Constitution of Athens which is both a history of Athenian constitutional development and a survey of the constitutional machinery of Aristotle's own day.
The second, by Xenophon, is an account of the Spartan social and educational system, and the third, also attributed to Xenophon, The Constitution of the Athenians, though probably by an earlier author, is the first example in history of political pamphleteering.
Dr. Moore has newly translated all three of these documents and an additional fragment The Boeotian Constitution written in the fourth century B. C. and the only surviving account of a genuinely oligarchic regime of the period.
To these much needed, scholarly translations Dr. Moore has added brilliant introductions and commentaries which evaluate the documents, illumine their significance, and provide the background information which the writers assumed their readers to possess.
In bringing together, translating, and annotating these constitutional documents from ancient Greece, Dr. Moore has produced an authoritative work of the highest scholarship which will place all students of constitutional history and of the Ancient World in his debt.
