306 Werner, Daniel S. MYTH AND PHILOSOPHY IN PLATO'S PHAEDRUS
Cambridge University Press 2012 1107021286 / 9781107021280 Hardcover Near Fine
Very light bump to one corner else new. Pictorial boards. ; 307 pages; Plato's dialogues frequently criticize traditional Greek myth, yet Plato also integrates myth with his writing. Daniel S. Werner confronts this paradox through an in-depth analysis of the Phaedrus, Plato's most mythical dialogue. Werner argues that the myths of the Phaedrus serve several complex functions: they bring nonphilosophers into the philosophical life; they offer a starting point for philosophical inquiry; they unify the dialogue as a literary and dramatic whole; they draw attention to the limits of language and the limits of knowledge; and they allow Plato to co-opt cultural authority as a way of defining and legitimating the practice of philosophy. Platonic myth, as a species of traditional tale, is thus both distinct from philosophical dialectic and similar to it. Ultimately, the most powerful effect of Platonic myth is the way in which it leads readers to participate in Plato's dialogues and to engage in a process of self-examination.

308 West, M. L. THE EPIC CYCLE A Commentary on the Lost Troy Epics
Oxford University Press 2013 0199662258 / 9780199662258 Hardcover Very Good+ in Near Fine dust jacket
Light soiling to to top of textblock. Else book is fine. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; The Iliad and Odyssey do not cover the main story of the Trojan War. The whole saga, which includes Zeus' plan to reduce the world's population, the Judgment of Paris and seduction of Helen, the start of the campaign, the Wooden Horse, the fall of Achilles, the homecoming of Agamemnon, and the eventual death of Odysseus, was related in six other epics, dating from 630-560 BCE, that were influential for lyric poets, tragedians, and artists of the classical age but are known to us only through fragments and brief prose summaries. In this book Martin West presents all the source material and provides the first comprehensive commentary on it, making full use of iconographic as well as literary evidence. Discussing the individual fragments and testimonia, he endeavours to reconstruct the connections between them, so far as possible, and to build up a picture of the plan and course of each poem. In a substantial introduction he addresses general issues, including the nature and formation of the Epic Cycle, the status of the summaries of the Troy epics preserved under the name of Proclus, the validity of the attested ascriptions to particular poets, the reflexes of the Cycle in early art and literature, and its fortunes in and after the Hellenistic period. ; 1.04 x 9.31 x 6.34 Inches; 352 pages

309 West, M. L. THE HESIODIC CATALOGUE OF WOMEN Its Nature, Structure, and Origins
Oxford Clarendon Press 1985 0198140347 / 9780198140344 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; The Catalogue of Women is an Ancient Greek poem. Ancient writers sometimes attributed it to Hesiod, although the poem contains a few references to events and things after Hesiod's time that could suggest that they were later added or that the epic is of a completely different author. Since Hesiod is known to us only as the author of the Works and Days and the Theogony, which may not have the same date or author, the distinction here is unclear. Since the dating of the poem is one of the most problematic issues surrounding it, the poem's author remains anonymous. ; 193 pages

328 Woodard, Roger D. (Ed. ) THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Cambridge University Press 2008 0521607264 / 9780521607261 Softcover Near Fine
A unique resource, 'The Cambridge Companion to Greek Mythology' is essential reading for understanding not only Greek myth, but also its enormous impact on art, architecture, literature, politics and philosophy across the ages. More than a compendium of isolated facts, 'The Cambridge Companion to Greek Mythology' is thoughtfully composed by a team of international experts who highlight important themes in three sections. The first part examines oral and written Greek mythology and the uses of these myths from the epic poetry of the eighth century BC to the mythographic catalogs of the early centuries AD. The second section looks at the relationship between ancient Greek myth and Greek culture and investigates the Roman appropriation of the Greek mythic tradition. Section three follows the reception of Greek myth from the Middle Ages to modernity, taking in such factors as feminist scholarship, cinema and literature. Important for its reach and breadth, its integrated approach and its up-to-date treatment, 'The Cambridge Companion to Greek Mythology' is fundamental for anyone seeking a broader understanding of the myths and their influence on western tradition. ; Cambridge Companions to Literature; 552 pages
