305 Kohler, Theodor W. HOMO ANIMAL NOBILISSIMUM Konturen Des Spezifisch Menschlichen in Der Naturphilosophischen Aristoteleskommentierung Des Dreizehnten Jahrhunderts, Teilband 1
Brill Academic Publishers 2008 9004162895 / 9789004162891 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Unwrapped in Plastic. ; In German; Studien Und Texte Zur Geistesgeschichte Des Mittelalters; 2.46 x 9.62 x 6.66 Inches; 986 pages; This monograph deals with the philosophical approach of thirteenth-century masters to concrete, practical manifestations of 'quantum ad naturalia' in human lives in their commentaries on Aristotle’s works on natural philosophy, both his genuine works and those then considered genuine. It inquires into what they deemed worthy of philosophical debate regarding this topic and how they tackled it. The first of the two volumes describes the cultural surroundings, the scholars’ way of approaching the topic, and their discourses on the peculiarity (singularity, unity, consistency) of humankind and on its internal differentiation according to gender, stage of life, social stratification, and differences due to ethnic status or geographic (climatic) diversity. This is the first comprehensive source-based study of the subject; it draws heavily on unedited texts.

Cambridge University Press 2005 052141069X / 9780521410694 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Digital Reprint of 1992 Edition. ; Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature; 0.75 x 9 x 6 Inches; 268 pages; This wide-ranging study examines the role of the dream in medieval culture with reference to philosophical, legal and theological writings as well as literary and autobiographical works. Stephen Kruger studies the development of theories of dreaming, from the Neoplatonic and patristic writers to late medieval re-interpretations, and shows how these theories relate to autobiographical accounts and to more popular treatments of dreaming. He considers previously neglected material including one important dream vision by Nicole Oresme, and arrives at a new understanding of this literary genre, and of medieval attitudes to dreaming in general.

Library barcode on ffep--however, no other library markings. Cloth has a tear along bottom of spine-- (2") but does not cut through the actual board. ; The essays in this volume offer a general overview and a number of detailed examinations of Arthur's fortunes, in two senses. First is the role of Fortune itself, often personified and consistently instrumental, in accounts of Arthur's court and reign. More generally the articles trace the trajectory of the Arthurian legend - its birth, rise and decline - through the middle ages. The final essay follows the continued turning of Fortune's wheel, emphasizing the modern revival and flourishing of the legend. The authors, all distinguished Arthurian scholars, illustrate their arguments through studies of early Latin and Welsh sources, chronicles, romances [in English, French, German, Italian, Latin and Welsh], manuscript illustration and modern literary texts. ; Arthurian Studies LXIV; 1.02 x 9.21 x 6.22 Inches; 288 pages

Princeton University Press 1992 0691069344 / 9780691069340 Hardcover Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket
Faint foxing to top of textblock. Light shelfwear to book and DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention, little has been written on how various generations of readers have found meaning in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Iliad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time, the authors clarify the position of the Iliad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiquity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading. This collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer, beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves, proceeding to readings by Aristotle, the Stoics, and Aristarchus and Crates, and culminating in the spiritualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C. E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Robert Browning, Anthony Grafton, Robert Lamberton, A. A. Long, James Porter, Nicholas Richardson, and Charles Segal. ; Magie Classical Publications; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages

318 Langdon, John S. BYZANTIUM'S LAST IMPERIAL OFFENSIVE IN ASIA MINOR The Documentary Evidence for and Hagiographical Lore about John III Ducas Vatatzes' Crusade Against the Turks, 1222 or 1225 to 1231
Aristide D. Caratzas 1992 0892414979 / 9780892414970 Hardcover Near Fine with no dust jacket Signed by Author
Very Minor shelfwear. Errata and outline inserted; Signed by author on ffep to Paul Padilla; Hellenism--Ancient, Mediaeval, Modern; 0.5 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 156 pages; The Emperor John III Ducas Vatatzes (1222-54) consolidated his imperium in Asia Minor by 1224. He appeared poised to launch a massive assault upon Latin-occupied Constantinople and to restore the pre-1204 Byzantine Empire. Yet John III suddenly abandoned this compelling strategy. Dr. Langdon compiles evidence suggesting that John III was absorbed in waging a crusade against the Turks along the Eastern frontier. Using Byzantine, Metabyzantine, Latin and Arabic sources the author is able to postulate the date for this conflict, and also that John III led the crusade personally. ; Signed by Author

321 Lappin, Anthony THE MEDIEVAL CULT OF SAINT DOMINIC OF SILOS
Maney Publishing 2002 1902653912 / 9781902653914 Softcover Very Good+
Corners are slightly lifting. Minor bump to spine corner. ; Lucas, the garrulous bishop of Tuy, included the thaumaturgy of Saint Dominicof Silos as one of the glories of Spain in his mid-thirteenth-century accountof the Peninsula's history. This study examines the rise to prominence of oneof the most important of saints' cults in Medieval Spain and its developmentthroughout the Middle Ages. It interrogates neglected texts such as the lateeleventh-century Vita Dominici Exiliensis and the late thirteenth-centuryMiráculos romançados (as well as artistic representations and works writtenoutside Silos) , and places the more widely known Vida de Santo Domingo byGonzalo de Berceo (? C. 1260) in a new light by firmly fixing its presentationof the saint within the development of the cult. Dominic's veneration became centred upon his role in freeing captives, and astudy of this phenomenon provides a focus on the frontier and its settlersthrough their devotion to the saint, as well as illuminating their view oftheir Muslim adversaries. This is not the only centre of interest in the book, and a variety ofapproaches are employed to draw as round a picture as possible of thefunctioning of this saint's cult, from analysis of the manuscript traditionsof the various works discussed to a consideration of the anthropology of Silosas a pilgrimage centre. All quotations are given in both Latin or Romance withan English translation. ; The MHRA Texts & Dissertations; Vol. 56; 470 pages

323 Law, Vivien THE INSULAR LATIN GRAMMARIANS
Boydell Press 1987 0851151477 / 9780851151472 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Minor creasing and sunning to front panel of DJ. ; The adaptation of Late Latin grammars from the schools of the Roman Empire for use in a foreign Christian society culminated in the British Isles in the 7th and 8th centuries in the development of two distinct types of grammar designed respectively for elementary and for more advanced students. These works, whether they take the form of elaborate commentaries on the classical grammarians, or of simple collections of paradigms, reflect the reading and intellectual preoccupations of their authors, the first teachers in the West to face the problem of large-scale formal foreign-language teaching. The influence of the Insular grammarians extended far beyond their own time: their works, taken to the Continent by Irish and Anglo-Saxon missionaries, shaped both the latinity and the pedagogical technique of their pupils the Carolingians, and their influencein foreign-language teaching has persisted until our own time. ; Studies in Celtic History; 9.3 X 6.4 X 0.7 inches; 145 pages

Chatto & Windus 2005 0701176873 / 9780701176877 Hardcover Fine in Very Good dust jacket
Book is fine. 2 cm tear to head of DJ spine. ; How often does a visitor to Rome drift towards some landmark and wonder who created it? Why? What was their story? This fascinating book provides the answers. At once a history and a guide, it divides Rome into the districts dominated by the fabulously rich families of the Popes: the Colonna, della Rovere, Farnese, Borghese, Barberini and others. In each case we learn their story - powerful, bloody and vivid - with all the scandals and intrigues as well as their relationships with artists like Bernini and Michelangelo. As we stroll through Rome s history - either literally or in the imagination - we discover it afresh. Famous sites like the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and St Peter s take on new significance as we watch the city rise from cramped medieval streets to become a glorious panorama of piazzas and palaces, fountains, towers and domes. ; 418 pages
