205 Frakes, Robert M. & Elizabeth Depalma Digeser & Justin Stephens (Eds. ) THE RHETORIC OF POWER IN LATE ANTIQUITY Religion and Politics in Byzantium, Europe and the Early Islamic World
Tauris Academic Studies 2010 1848854099 / 9781848854093 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
A couple of tiny dots to textblock (as published? ). Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. ; Library of Classical Studies; 320 pages; Late Antiquity, the period of transition from the crisis of Roman Empire in the third century to the Middle Ages, has traditionally been considered only in terms of the "decline" from classical standards. Recent classical scholarship strives to consider this period on its own terms. Taking the reign of Constantine the Great as its starting point, this book examines the unique intersection of rhetoric, religion and politics in Late Antiquity. Expert scholars come together to examine ancient rhetorical texts to explore the ways in which late antique authors drew upon classical traditions, presenting Roman and post-Roman religious and political institutions in order to establish a desired image of a "new era." This book provides new insights into how the post-Roman Germanic West, Byzantine East and Muslim South appropriated and transformed the political, intellectual and cultural legacy inherited from the late Roman Empire and its borderlands.

206 Frier, Bruce W. LIBRI ANNALES PONTIFICUM MAXIMORUM The Origins of the Annalistic Tradition
University of Michigan Press 1999 0472109154 / 9780472109159 Hardcover Fine in Very Good dust jacket
A couple of small tears to bottom corners of DJ else Fine. ; The Papers and Monographs of the American Academy in Rome; 368 pages; Recent years have seen a welcome growth of interest in the history of early Rome. Libri Annales Pontificum Maximorum: the Origins of the Annalistic Tradition contributes important information on this period by focusing on the earliest stages of Roman historical writing. The book is once again available, with a new Introduction by the author that brings the work up to date and helps place it in its current context. This book remains the starting point for study of the pre-annalistic tradition of Roman history. When first published, the volume sparked a lively debate among classicists and historians of the ancient world. Previous scholarship had often assigned the pontifical chronicle a central role not only in preserving the history of the early Republic, but also in shaping the form of the annalistic tradition. But the author showed that these assumptions rested on insecure foundations; to a large extent, they misrepresented the historiographic development of the annalistic tradition as we know it from, above all, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Perhaps the book's most controversial contention was that the final eighty-book edition of the chronicle, which previous scholars had dated to the later second century BCE, is more probably a massive reworking of materials in the Augustan period. This finding will likely require a considerable revision in our understanding of the development of the annalistic tradition. In the course of making these innovative arguments, the author offers extensive information about the origins of the annalistic tradition and about the early history and historiography of Rome. Bruce W. Frier is Professor of Classics and Roman Law, and Henry King Ransom Professor of Law, University of Michigan. He has published numerous books and articles on classical and legal topics, and has won the Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit from the American Philological Association.

This symbiosis manifests itself particularly clearly in Greek sanctuaries as locations of both cult practices and political activities.
; Collection Latomus Volume 333; 344 pages

216 Garland, Robert INTRODUCING NEW GODS The Politics of Athenian Religion
Ithaca, New York, U.S.A. Cornell University Press 1992 0801427665 / 9780801427664 Hardcover Very Good
Faint foxing to textblock. Boards a bit rubbed. 1 corner lightly bumped. ; The religious imagination of the Greeks, Robert Garland observes, was populated by divine beings whose goodwill could not be counted upon, and worshipers faced a heavy burden of choice among innumerable deities to whom they might offer their devotion. These deities—and Athenian polytheism itself—remained in constant flux as cults successively came into favor and waned. Examining the means through which the Athenians established and marketed cults, this handsomely illustrated book is the first to illuminate the full range of motives—political and economic, as well as spiritual—that prompted them to introduce new gods. ; 234 pages

220 Gelzer, Mattias; Needham, Peter CAESAR Politician and Statesman
Harvard University Press 1968 0674090012 / 9780674090019 Softcover Near Fine
Minor shelfwear. ; In 1912 a young scholar published a slim volume investigating the social structure of the late Roman Republic, which was in due course to transform the study of Roman history. The author, Professor Gelzer, went on to hold the Chair of Ancient History at Frankfurt and to become the greatest German-speaking historian of the Roman Republic since Mommsen. In 1921 he published his Caesar, which has by now gone through six editions in Germany and is still the standard account, in any language, of Caesar and his age. It amply fulfills the author's intent "to give the educated public a lively picture of the complete political career of one of the great statesmen of the past. " Based on a conscientious evaluation of the abundant source materials--primarily the writings of Caesar and his contemporaries--Professor Gelzer's portrait renders Caesar in heroic proportions, destined and determined from the beginning to overthrow a corrupt aristocracy. The sixth edition (1960) , brought up to date and provided with full annotations by the author, is the basis of this translation, which for the first time makes the work available in English. With Professor Gelzer's approval, some minor errors have been corrected, both in the text and in the chronological table and the map at the end of the book, and an analytical index of names has been added. ; 0.85 x 9.01 x 6.06 Inches; 368 pages

238 Grainger, John D. THE CITIES OF SELEUKID SYRIA
Oxford Clarendon Press 1990 0198146949 / 9780198146940 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.02 x 8.5 x 5.67 Inches; 264 pages; This book is the first detailed study of the foundation, history, government, growth and decline of the cities founded in Syria by Seleukos I in 301BC shortly after the time of Alexander the Great. It throws new light on an important period in ancient history. In particular, Dr Grainger concentrates on the relationship between the kings and the cities in their kingdoms and reveals that former theories concerning such a relationship require drastic revision. Most importantly the relationship is shown to have been much more to the kings' advantage than previous discussions on Hellenistic states have supposed. He argues in fact that neither the kings nor the cities intended the cities to be autonomous or independent since they were far too reliant on royal support against the enmity of the surrounding population. Evidence for this can be seen in the actions of the cities on the collapse of the Seleukid dynasty in the first century BC; then they were forced to cast about for a new protector and eventually accepted Rome albeit reluctantly. Dr Grainger discusses the differing fate of the cities during this process when some failed altogether, most declined, and only one, Antioch, prospered.

242 Griffin, Miriam T. SENECA A Philosopher in Politics
Oxford University Press 1976 0198143656 / 9780198143659 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Light shelfwear to book. Light foxing to top of textblock. Minor spotting to rear board. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). DJ is price-clipped. DJ spine a bit sunned. ; The relationship between Seneca's prose works and his career as a first-century Roman statesman is problematic, for while he writes in the first person, he tells little of his external life or of the people and events that formed its setting. In this book, Miriam Griffin addresses the problem by first reconstructing Seneca's career using only outside sources and his de Clementia and Apocolocyntosis. In the second part of the book she studies Seneca's treatment of subjects of political significance, including his views on slavery, provincial policy, wealth, and suicide. Finding that on the whole, the word of the philosopher illuminates the work of the statesman, this book provides an important objective reconstruction of Seneca's political career. ; 504 pages

250 Habinek, Thomas N. THE POLITICS OF LATIN LITERATURE Writing, Identity, and Empire in Ancient Rome
Princeton University Press 2001 0691089841 / 9780691089843 Paperback Very Good+
Faint shelfwear to book with faint crease to spine. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; This is the first book to describe the intimate relationship between Latin literature and the politics of ancient Rome. Until now, most scholars have viewed classical Latin literature as a product of aesthetic concerns. Thomas Habinek shows, however, that literature was also a cultural practice that emerged from and intervened in the political and social struggles at the heart of the Roman world. Habinek considers major works by such authors as Cato, Cicero, Horace, Ovid, and Seneca. He shows that, from its beginnings in the late third century b. C. To its eclipse by Christian literature six hundred years later, classical literature served the evolving interests of Roman and, more particularly, aristocratic power. It fostered a prestige dialect, for example; it appropriated the cultural resources of dominated and colonized communities; and it helped to defuse potentially explosive challenges to prevailing values and authority. Literature also drew upon and enhanced other forms of social authority, such as patriarchy, religious ritual, cultural identity, and the aristocratic procedure of self-scrutiny, or existimatio. Habinek's analysis of the relationship between language and power in classical Rome breaks from the long Romantic tradition of viewing Roman authors as world-weary figures, aloof from mundane political concerns--a view, he shows, that usually reflects how scholars have seen themselves. The Politics of Latin Literature will stimulate new interest in the historical context of Latin literature and help to integrate classical studies into ongoing debates about the sociology of writing. ; 248 pages
