176 Boyle, Anthony ROMAN EPIC
Routledge 1993 0415042305 / 9780415042307 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket
Very minor shelfwear to book. Small chips to top of spine. DJ has creasing and 1 tear (repaired with clear tape) along upper edge. ; 2 x 10 x 8 Inches; 340 pages; Roman epic lays firm claim to being Western civilization's prime literary form. Roman Epic draws together 14 critically and methodologically distinct essays, focusing on particular epicists, their reaction to, influence on, and rewriting of each other. The book examines the formation and transformation of Roman epic from its beginnings in the third century B. C. Saturnian poets Livius and Naevius to the Renaissance Latin epic of Petrarch and Vida. What results is the revelation of Roman epic not only as Rome's highest poetic genre but as a self-consciously intertextual, primarily political form. The Roman epicist's creative exploitation of his predecessors is not restricted to stylistic similarities and generic codes, but often encompasses more important levels of social, moral and political meaning. In the Roman tradition, the epic form shows an impetus to reform the celebratory values implicit in the form itself, admitting a plurality of interactive, often critical narrative voices. This book reveals how the epic developed and critically considers the generic and literary tradition to which the texts belong. It demonstrates epic's critical significance for the foundational culture of the Western world.

180 Brain, Peter GALEN ON BLOODLETTING A Study of the Origins, Development and Validity of his Opinions, with a Translation of the Three Works
Cambridge University Press 1986 0521320852 / 9780521320856 1st Edition Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
202 pages; For more than two thousand years, almost all doctors in the West used bloodletting to treat a great variety of diseases and conditions. In an attempt to find out why they acted thus, Dr Brain has translated the three works on bloodletting by the second-century physician Galen, which provide by far the most comprehensive account of the practice in antiquity. This is the first published version of these works in a modern language. After a brief summary of Galen's medical system, the author goes on to consider the origins of Galen's ideas and methods, with particular reference to the Hippocratic writings, and the question why Galen, in common with most of the ancient physicians, believed in the efficacy of the comedy. The effects of bloodletting are considered in terms of modem physiology and medicine, and the possibility is explored that it may indeed have been beneficial in the conditions prevailing in Galen's time.

198 Briscoe, John A COMMENTARY ON LIVY Books 41-45
Oxford University Press 2012 0199216649 / 9780199216642 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
1 cm tear to base of spine of book and DJ. Very Slight bump to lower corners. ; Livy's History of Rome covers the city's foundation to 9 BC in 142 Books of which only 1-10 and 21-45 survive. This is the fourth and final volume of John Briscoe's commentary on the last fifteen surviving Books of Livy. Books 41-45 cover the years 178-167 BC and deal with the Third Macedonian War which lasted from 171-168 BC, and resulted, as had been the senate's intention, in the destruction of the Macedonian monarchy. Livy's text depends on a single manuscript of late antiquity, which is not only considered as highly corrupt but has also suffered substantial physical losses. The volume's introduction contains a discussion of the causes of and events leading to the outbreak of war, as well as sections on Livy's sources, the text, chronology, and Roman legions in service during the period. Briscoe's final commentary also looks in detail at the historical, textual, linguistic, and stylistic matters of Livy's narrative and eschews the narratological approach of much recent work on Livy. ; 800 pages
