152 Maas, Michael JOHN LYDUS AND THE ROMAN PAST Antiquarianism and Politics in the Age of Justinian
Routledge 1992 0415060214 / 9780415060219 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good+ dust jacket
Light spotting to top of textblock. Very light shelfwear to DJ. Small knock to middle of foreedge of front board else Fine. ; 220 pages; John Lydus, a retired official at Justinian's court in the mid-6th century, is an important, neglected source for the study of the fate of the classical legacy in the newly Christianized Roman empire, Byzantium.

Examining his work On Portents, On the Months and On Magistracies, Michael Maas establishes Lydus as a credible witness to the political and cultural milieu in the age of Justinian--at the moment when the state re-historicized itself and its Roman legacy in Christian terms. Within a few generations, addressing antiquity from a non-Christian viewpoint would have been unthinkable. From his place on the edge of this shifting paradigm, Lydus' writings help us to see the emergence of medieval Byzantium through Roman eyes.

155 MacDonald, Dennis R. THE HOMERIC EPICS AND THE GOSPEL OF MARK
Yale University Press 2000 0300080123 / 9780300080124 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Fine dust jacket
Very faint foxing to top of textblock. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and that he wanted his readers to recognise the Homeric antecedents in Mark's story of Jesus. Mark was composing a prose anti-epic, MacDonald says, presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes. Much like Odysseus, Mark's Jesus sails the seas with uncomprehending companions, encounters preternatural opponents, and suffers many things before confronting rivals who have made his house a den of thieves. In his death and burial, Jesus emulates Hector, although unlike Hector Jesus leaves his tomb empty. Mark's minor characters, too, recall Homeric predecessors: Bartimaeus emulates Tiresias; Joseph of Arimathea, Priam; and the women at the tomb, Helen, Hecuba, and Andromache. And, entire episodes in Mark mirror Homeric episodes, including stilling the sea, walking on water, feeding the multitudes, the Triumphal Entry, and Gethsemane. The book concludes with a discussion of the profound significance of this new reading of Mark for understanding the gospels and early Christianity. ; 272 pages

157 Marcovich, M. ; Clement Of Alexandria CLEMENTIS ALEXANDRINI PROTREPTICUS
Brill Academic Publishers 1995 9004104496 / 9789004104495 Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Minor bump to top corners. ; Vigiliae Christianae, Supplements , No 34; 0.85 x 9.64 x 6.38 Inches; 240 pages; Clement of Alexandria (ca A.D. 150-215) is one of the leading Church Fathers and the first Christian philosopher. His early Protrepticus is of great significance for Patristics, Classical scholarship, Greek philosophy and religion. The treatise is preserved virtually in a single manuscript --the famous Codex Arethae, Parisinus graecus 451, copied in 913-914,-- which proves to be lacunose, corrupt, interpolated and dislocated. The only critical edition of the Protrepticus was prepared back in 1905 by Otto Stahlin (G.C.S., Volume 12). The present edition is based on a thorough in-depth study of the Parisinus, on the inclusion of the entire opus of Clement, on an extended and updated Quellenforschung, and finally, on a more sensitive approach to meaning and textual criticism. The edition includes the Scholia.

163 Meeks, Wayne A. THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIAN MORALITY The First Two Centuries
Yale University Press 1995 0300065132 / 9780300065138 Softcover Near Fine
Minor yellowing to rear wrap else fine. ; X, 275pp. By the time Christianity became a political and cultural force in the Roman Empire, it had come to embody a new moral vision. This wise and eloquent book describes the formative years-from the crucifixion of Jesus to the end of the second century of the common era-when Christian beliefs and practices shaped their unique moral order. Wayne A. Meeks examines the surviving documents from Christianity's beginnings (some of which became the New Testament) and shows that they are largely concerned with the way converts to the movement should behave. Meeks finds that for these Christians, the formation of morals means the formation of community; the documents are addressed not to individuals but to groups, and they have among their primary aims the maintenance and growth of these groups. Meeks paints a picture of the process of socialization that produced the early forms of Christian morality, discussing many factors that made the Christians feel that they were a single and "chosen" people. He describes, for example, the impact of conversion; the rapid spread of Christian household cult-associations in the cities of the Roman Empire; the language of Christian moral discourse as revealed in letters, testaments, and "moral stories"; the rituals, meetings, and institutionalization of charity; the Christians' feelings about celibacy, sex, and gender roles; and their sense of the end-time and final judgment. In each of these areas Meeks seeks to determine what is distinctive about the Christian viewpoint and what is similar to the moral components of Greco-Roman or Jewish thought. ; 275 pages

175 O'Donnell, James J. AUGUSTINE A New Biography
Ecco 2005 0060535377 / 9780060535377 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Light pencil marginalia to a few pages (by R. E. Fantham). Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Augustine, sinner and saint, the celebrated theologian who served as bishop of ... Hippo from 396 C. E. Until his death in ... 430 C. E. , is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the western world. Augustine: A New Biography tells the story of Augustine from the vantage point of Hippo, where he spent almost forty years as priest and bishop. During Augustine's post-Confessions years he became prominent as a churchman, politician, and writer, and James J. O'Donnell looks back at the events in the Confessions from this period in Augustine's life. Much of Augustine's writing consists of sermons and letters rich in vivid primary material about the events of his time. Prosperous men converting to Christianity to get ahead, priests covering up their sexual and financial peccadilloes, generals playing coldly calculated games of Roman barbarian geopolitics -- these are the figures who stand out in Augustine's world and who populate O'Donnell's intriguing portrait set against a background of the battle over the future of Christianity. This book reveals much of what Augustine didn't confess. ; 416 pages

194 Rich, John THE CITY IN LATE ANTIQUITY
Routledge 1996 0415144310 / 9780415144315 Softcover Fine
Leicester-Nottingham Studies in Ancient Society; 0.69 x 8.45 x 5.46 Inches; 216 pages; The Roman Empire in its early centuries was a world of cities, dominated by landowning elites and conforming to a common pattern in their institutions, buildings and culture. In The City in Late Antiquity archaeologists and historians bring together their two disciplines to discuss what became of these cities, after the crisis of the third century and the later collapse of the Empire. While the classical city has often been portrayed as in decline everywhere by the fourth century, this book shows this picture to be too simplistic. In some regions, such as Africa, old customs were still vigorous, while elsewhere, for example in Britain, urban life disappeared and the cities survived only as fortresses, if at all. This book pays particular attention to the impact of the Christianization of the Empire on the cities.
