151 Connor, W. Robert THUCYDIDES
Princeton University Press 1984 0691035695 / 9780691035697 Hardcover Fine in Very Good dust jacket
Dustjacket has minor edgewear with one closed tear (1") to top of front panel and one small closed tear to bottom of back panel. DJ has rubbing. ; 266 pages; This full-scale sequential reading of Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War will be invaluable to the specialist and also to those in search of an introduction and companion to the "Histories. " Moving beyond other studies by its focus on the reader's role in giving meaning to the text, it reveals Thucydides' use of objectivity not so much as standard for the proper presentation of his subject matter as a method for communicating with his readers and involving them in the complexity and suffering of the Peloponnesian War. W. Robert Connor shows that as Thucydides' themes and ideas are reintroduced and developed, the initial reactions of the reader are challenged, subverted, and eventually made to contribute to a deeper understanding of the war. This book described earlier approaches to the "Histories, " including attempts to account for the paradox of the intense emotional power of a work ostensibly so cool and detached. It demonstrates that many features previously thought to be signs of inconsistencies in Thucydides' thought or of different stages of composition are instead parts of the development of the reader's reaction to the war.

152 Conwell, David H. CONNECTING A CITY TO THE SEA The History of the Athenian Long Walls
Brill Academic Publishers 2008 9004162321 / 9789004162327 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Unwrapped in Plastic. ; The Long Walls joining Athens with its harbors are universally recognized as symbols of naval imperialism and the lynchpin of a radical departure from traditional Greek military strategy during the later fifth century B. C. Nevertheless, many important questions about the structures remain disputed or simply neglected. As the first comprehensive history of the Long Walls, the present study dates each construction phase, examines the function of the structures from beginning to end, and chronicles their fluctuating viability. The analysis is driven by the proposition that the Athenians would not have relied on the walls to the sea when their navy did not control the sea lanes effectively. This full consideration of the Long Walls' development and strategic prominence over time will enable accurate assessment of their position in Greek military and political history from classical through early Hellenistic times.; History and Archaeology of Classical Antiquity; 0.8 x 9.6 x 6.5 Inches; 267 pages

Tiny sticker stain to ffep. Else book and DJ fine. ; Contents: Part One: ATHENS. Drakonian Procedure (David Mirhady) ; Hypereides, Aristophon, and the Settlement of Keos (Craig Cooper) ; Athenians in Sicily in the Fourth Century BC (David Whitehead) ; IG ii2 1622 and the Collection of Naval Debts in the 340s (Kathryn Simonsen) ; Slave-Names of IG i3 1032 and the Ideology of Slavery at Athens (Bruce Robertson) ; Part Two: ATHENS FROM THE OUTSIDE: THE WIDER GREEK WORLD. Theopompos and the Public Documentation of Fifth-Century Athens (Frances Pownall) ; Horton Hears an Ionian (Gordon Shrimpton) ; Rescuing Local History: Epigraphy and the Island of Thera (Sheila Ager). ; Phoenix Journal of the Classical Association of Canada Supplementary Volume XLVII; 224 pages; Epigraphy is a method of inferring and analyzing historical data by means of inscriptions found on ancient artifacts such as stones, coins, and statues. It has proven indispensable for archaeologists and classicists, and has considerable potential for the study of ancient history at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Epigraphy and the Greek Historian is a collection of essays that explore various ways in which inscriptions can help students reconstruct and understand Greek History. In order to engage with the study of epigraphy, this collection is divided into two parts, Athens and Athens from the outside. The contributors maintain the importance of epigraphy, arguing that, in some cases, inscriptions are the only tools we have to recover the local history of places that stand outside the main focus of ancient literary sources, which are often frustratingly Athenocentric. Ideally, the historian uses both inscriptions and literary sources to make plausible inferences and thereby weave together the disconnected threads of the past into a connected and persuasive narrative. Epigraphy and the Greek Historian is a comprehensive examination of epigraphy and a timely resource for students and scholars involved in the study of ancient history.

160 Cotterell, Arthur CHARIOT The Astounding Rise and Fall of the World's First War Machine
Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Narrating the development and disappearance of the world's first war machine, this book reminds readers that much of the power of ancient empires was two-wheeled and horse-driven. Harnessed to other historians' broad-spectrum research on the causes of the end of the Bronze Age, Cotterell argues that, much like the later introduction of the stirrup, chariot technology dramatically recast battlefield strategy across the ancient world. Egyptians employed chariots as all-purpose fighting machines, while Roman chariots were more ceremonial, and Indian troops used theirs as archery platforms; Chinese engineers developed more efficient harnesses, permitting heavier cars. The author's comparative approach broadens the appeal of what would otherwise seem a narrow topic, but this account nevertheless behaves as a detailed military history. Particularly interesting for such scholarship, the author also discusses the chariot as a vehicle for modern popular culture; it aims to dispel the notion that chariots were simply horse-pulled tanks. Scholarly yet accessible, ; 344 pages

Text is in Latin. ; 0.5 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 106 pages; Craterus the Macedonian historian was brother of Antigonus II Gonatas, and father of Alexander (prince of Corinth). He distinguished himself as a diligent compiler of historical documents relating to the history of Attica. He made a collection of Attic inscriptions, containing decrees of the people (psephismaton synagoge) and out of them he seems to have constructed a diplomatic history of Athens. This work is frequently referred to by Harpocration and Stephanus of Byzantium, the latter of whom (s. V. Nymphaion quotes the ninth book of it. With the exception of the statements contained in these and other passages, the work of Craterus, which must have been of great value, is lost.

Brill Academic Publishers 2002 9004124748 / 9789004124745 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava : Supplementum; 1 x 9.7 x 6.3 Inches; 301 pages; This is a book about the law and life of Rome—in which contributors respond to John Crook's injunction to 'think like lawyers' by ranging as far as ancient Greece, ancient Persia and modern Denmark to expound their themes and draw comparisons. An opening section focuses on Civil Law, more or less as conventionally conceived, with chapters on the peculium, on municipal law at Irni in Roman Spain, on advisers of Roman provincial governors, and on violent crime. Roman perceptions of the physical and human worlds are the focus of a second section, and comparisons between Greek, Roman and modern ways of thinking about law and government come into the third section. In the final section, contributors argue the history of law and life from refractions of real and imagined Rome.

Minor shelfwear to book and DJ. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; 1.25 x 10 x 6.75 Inches; 371 pages; British historian Davidson takes us inside classical Greece's brothels, bedrooms, drinking parties and banquets in this rarefied scholarly inquiry. His aim is not merely to depict Athenians as pleasure seekers but to overturn the current notion, purveyed by Michel Foucault and others, that Athens was a "phallocratic" society permeated with an ethos of penetration and domination, a homosexual-leaning culture polarized between adult male citizens and all others: Slaves, women, boys, foreigners. He largely succeeds on all counts, bringing to convivial life a predominantly heterosexual society where classes mingled easily; cultured courtesans bedded leading figures like Pericles and Alcibiades; and wives participated fully in sexual pleasures. Drawing on ancient treatises, pamphlets, comic plays, poems and speeches, Davidson investigates the classical Greeks' indulgences, including their mania for eating fish, A luxury viewed as hedonistic, And their tolerance for booze and sex (though sex addicts were considered to have a lower capacity to resist the natural pleasures). His intriguing study serves up a banquet of arcane lore.

189 Derow, Peter & Robert Parker (Eds. ) HERODOTUS AND HIS WORLD Essays from a Conference in Memory of George Forrest
Oxford University Press 2003 0199253749 / 9780199253746 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Illuminates Herodotus and the world in which he wrote. The novel and enlightening contributions are as varied in focus and approach as the interests and backgrounds of the authors. There are detailed studies of a number of individual passages and episodes (which always turn out to have wider ramifications for the understanding of Herodotus or for the history of the archaic and classical Greek world, or both) as well as considerations of wider themes (perceptions of ethnicity and ideas of 'tradition', of historical space and about the origins of history). There is prophecy, oracle-selling, and resurrection. There is narrative management and the prosaics of death. Herodotean chronology is revisited. There is epigraphy. There are accounts of why Herodotus did not mention the Hanging Gardens and why he has not been taken as seriously as he should have been by military historians. There are Cleisthenes and Cleomenes, there are Argos and Corinth. And, of course, there is Athens and its democracy. In addition to presenting a picture of Herodotean studies today the volume offers plenty to stimulate further enquiry; 400 pages

199 Dillery, John XENOPHON AND THE HISTORY OF HIS TIMES
Routledge 1995 041509139X / 9780415091398 Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Top corners lightly bumped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; 1.26 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 352 pages; With an examination into Xenophon's longer historical works, the "Hellenica" and the "Anabasis", Dillery considers how far these texts reflect the Greek intellectual world of the fourth and fifth centuries B. C. , rather than focusing on the traditional question of how accurate they are as histories. Through the analysis of the complete corpus of Xenophon's work and the writings of his contemporaries, Xenophon is shown to be very much a man of his times, concerned with topical issues ranging from panhellenism and utopia to how far the gods controlled human history.
