101 Fox, Robin Lane TRAVELLING HEROES Greeks and Their Myths in the Epic Age of Homer
Allen Lane 2008 0713999802 / 9780713999808 Hardcover Very Good+ in Near Fine dust jacket
One bumped corner else Fine. Very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; 528 pages; Oxford classicist [Robin Lane] Fox explores the 700s BCE, the century to which he imputes the composition of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Explaining that this was an era of cultural contact between Greeks—specifically, those from the island Euboea—and residents of the eastern littoral of the Mediterranean Sea, he delves deeply into the nature of that exchange. Aiming to evoke the Euboeans' mind-set, he springs from the archaeological traces of their settlements to the gods and heroes of the Near East they adapted into their own myths. While there is considerable textual explication of Homer and Hesiod involved in Fox's procedure, he pulls the mythical characters from the pages and places them in the physical landscapes with which the Euboeans not only associated them but believed they actively inhabited. So doing lends the appealing impetus of travel writing to Fox's account that aids readers in absorbing the world of pagan belief

112 Gordon, R. K. THE STORY OF TROILUS As Told by Benoit De Sainte-Maure, Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, Robert Henryson
University of Toronto Press 1978 0802063683 / 9780802063687 Softcover Near Fine
Reprint of 1988. With its informative introduction, collects the major medieval versions of the story of Troilus and Criseyde, each putting its own "spin" on the plot and characterization. Benoît's 12th-cent. Roman de Troie is the first version we know. Boccaccio used Troilus's woes as a medium for expressing his own grief over a lost love; his poem, Il Filostrato ("the one prostrated by love") is the raciest version, in which Criseyde eagerly joins in the lovemaking. Boccaccio also added Pandarus as the go-between. Key books from Chaucer's poem are included, as well as Henryson's Testament of Cresseid (1490). ; Mediaeval Academy Reprints for Teaching; 0.81 x 8.96 x 6.04 Inches

115 Grandazzi, Alexandre; Todd, Jane Marie THE FOUNDATION OF ROME Myth and History
Cornell University Press 1997 080143114X / 9780801431142 Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket
Top corners lightly bumped. Light general soiling. ; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 236 pages; "The Foundation of Rome is one of the few intelligent books on the subject, neither hypercritical nor visionary; its particular strength lies in the skillful interweaving of modern historiography and ideology with ancient history. "--Jerzy Linderski, University of North Carolina. At once a historical essay and a self-conscious meditation on the writing of history, The Foundation of Rome takes as its starting point a series of accounts of Rome's origins offered over the course of centuries. Alexandre Grandazzi places these accounts in their contemporary contexts and shows how the growing sophistication in methodology gradually changed the accepted views of the city's origins. He looks, for example, at the hypercritical philology of the nineteenth century which cast aside everything that could not be verified. He then explains how the increase in archaeological discoveries and changing archaeological techniques influenced the story of Rome's birth. Grandazzi produces a depiction of Rome's origins that is both up-to-date and provocative. His use of scientific parallels in describing changes in the ways texts were analyzed and his broad familiarity with comparative material make his synthesis particularly illuminating, and he writes with clarity, verve, and wit.

137 Hunter, Richard THE ARGONAUTICA OF APOLLONIUS Literary Studies
Cambridge University Press 1993 0521413729 / 9780521413725 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Light bumping to lower edge. Pencil marginalia to a couple of pages. Creasing and 1 chip along top edge of DJ. ; 216 pages; In recent years the subtlety and complexity of Apollonius' Argonautica have been better appreciated, but in Dr Hunter's view the purposes and aesthetic of the epic are still not readily understood and much basic analysis remains to be done. The present book seeks to offer some of that analysis and to place the Argonautica within its social and intellectual context. A series of studies deal with notions of heroism; with eros and the suffering of Medea; the role of the divine; poetic voice and literary self-consciousness; and the Ptolemaic context of the poem. A pervasive theme of the book is Apollonius' creative engagement with Homer, and a final chapter sketches out an approach to Virgil's use of Apollonius in the Aeneid. The Argonautica emerges as a brilliant and original experiment. This book is the only advanced study of the Argonautica currently available. All Greek is translated.
