1 Beecroft, Alexander AUTHORSHIP AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN EARLY GREECE AND CHINA Patterns of Literary Circulation
Cambridge University Press 2010 0521194318 / 9780521194310 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
338 pages; In this book, Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece (Homeric epic and lyric) and China (the Canon of Songs) evolved from being local, oral, and anonymous to being textualized, interpreted, and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan, and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Confucius, and Sima Qian. Many of these anecdotes and narratives have long been rejected as spurious or motivated by naïve biographical criticism. Beecroft argues that these texts effectively negotiated the tensions between local and pan-cultural audiences. The figure of the author thus served as a catalyst to a sense of shared cultural identity in both the Greek and Chinese worlds. It also facilitated the emergence of both cultures as the bases for cosmopolitan world orders.

St Pauls Publications 2014 098064285X / 9780980642858 Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket
Light bumping to a couple of corners. Else fine; This book investigates the origin and the character of Early Chinese Christianity (Œi‹³Jingjiao) during the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE). It sets Tang Christianity against the background of Syriac Christianity and the Tang cultural milieu, and then particularly focuses on the Tang Christian Monument and two Dunhuang manuscripts, the Hymn to the Trinity and Saints and Scriptures, providing syntactical analyses and fresh translations of the primary material. The research integrates western and Chinese scholarship on the subject and also provides an assessment of the history and theology of Tang Christianity. The book argues that Tang Christianity should not be branded with the Nestorian label, but must be understood in its own right. ; Early Christian Studies 17; 428 pages

The main historical significance of Dr. Janse's archaeological documents is to be found in the fact that they not only introduce to us the Chinese conquerors of what was to become Vietnam, at the very moment when they were laying its foundations as a civilized nation, buy they also reflect on Chinese culture and conditions even at home and may help to give us a clearer idea of what the Chinese were, about the beginning of our era, and what their quest was, so far south of the Honanese cradle of their civilization.

15 Tzu, Sun & Thomas Cleary (Trans. ) THE ART OF WAR Sun Tzu
Shambhala 1988 0877734526 / 9780877734529 Paperback Very Good
Light creasing and rubbing to wraps. Foxing to textblock. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; Compiled more than two thousand years ago by a mysterious warrior-philosopher, The Art of War is still perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world today, as eagerly studied in Asia by modern politicians and executives as it as been by military leaders since ancient times. As a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict, The Art of War applies to competition and conflict in general, on every level from the interpersonal to the international. Its aim is invincibility, victory without battle, and unassailable strength through understanding of the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict. This translation presents the classic from the point of view of its background in the great spiritual tradition of Taoism, the origin of psychology, science, and technology in East Asia and the source of the insights into human nature that underlie this most revered of handbooks for success. Translated from a standard collection of commentaries on Sun Tzu's text by eleven interpreters, the work has been edited by Thomas Cleary to bring out the meaning of the principles of strategy. In addition, the translator provides an extensive introduction discussing the content and background of the book. ; 184 pages
