10 Adler, Eric VALORIZING THE BARBARIANS Enemy Speeches in Roman Historiography
University of Texas Press 2011 0292726287 / 9780292726284 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Ashley and Peter Larkin Series in Greek and Roman Culture; 300 pages; With the growth of postcolonial theory in recent decades, scholarly views of Roman imperialism and colonialism have been evolving and shifting. Much recent discussion of the topic has centered on the ways in which ancient Roman historians consciously or unconsciously denigrated non-Romans. Similarly, contemporary scholars have downplayed Roman elite anxiety about their empire's expansion. In this groundbreaking new work, Eric Adler explores the degree to which ancient historians of Rome were capable of valorizing foreigners and presenting criticisms of their own society. By examining speeches put into the mouths of barbarian leaders by a variety of writers, he investigates how critical of the empire these historians could be. Adler examines pairs of speeches purportedly delivered by non-Roman leaders so that the contrast between them might elucidate each writer's sense of imperialism. Analyses of Sallust's and Trogus's treatments of the Eastern ruler Mithradates, Polybius's and Livy's speeches from Carthage's Hannibal, and Tacitus's and Cassius Dio's accounts of the oratory of the Celtic warrior queen Boudica form the core of this study. Adler supplements these with examinations of speeches from other characters, as well as contextual narrative from the historians. Throughout, Adler wrestles with broader issues of Roman imperialism and historiography, including administrative greed and corruption in the provinces, the treatment of gender and sexuality, and ethnic stereotyping.

15 Albertson, Fred C. MARS AND RHEA SILVIA IN ROMAN ART
Latomus 2012 2870312776 / 9782870312773 Softcover Fine
Among the stories surrounding the legendary foundation of the city of Rome by the twins, Romulus and Remus, previous scholarly attention has focused primarily on one scene – the depiction of the she-wolf nursing the twins following their miraculous salvation from the floodwaters of the Tiber. This book examines another event in the cycle, the conception of the twins, in which the Vestal Virgin, Rhea Silvia, is visited in her sleep and raped by the god Mars. Some fifty-one examples of the encounter of Mars and Rhea Silvia are analyzed, drawn from coins, relief sculpture, gems, wall painting, mosaics, and pottery, covering a time frame from the motif’s origin in the early 1st century B. C. To its disappearance in the late 4th century A. D. An analysis of the scene's iconographical evolution and its documented periods of popularity, both in the public and private sphere, are associated with contemporary trends in Roman literature, religion, and art. This monograph on the representation of Mars and Rhea Silvia is not simply a self-contained study of a single motif over a specific time frame. Within the realm of Roman art, the book discusses larger issues concerning the relationship between art, myth and religion, and political propaganda, drawing from methodologies of appropriation (Kopienkritik) , word and image, semiotics, and memory culture. As such, the book constitutes a case study whose conclusions may serve as guidelines for the study of Roman art in general. ; Collection Latomus Volume 336; 241 pages

23 Alison, Jane & Alison Keith (Intro. ) & Elaine Fantham (Foreword) CHANGE ME Stories of Sexual Transformation from Ovid
Oxford University Press 2014 0199941653 / 9780199941650 Paperback Near Fine
Very faint shelfwear else fine. ; In Change Me, Jane Alison, critically acclaimed author of The Love-Artist, renders substantial portions of Ovid's great epic into elegant and remarkably faithful English. Her focus is on episodes that involve desire, sexuality, and the transformations brought about by powerful emotion; because these themes are so central to the Metamorphoses, Alison introduces them with a selection of elegies from Ovid's Amores, the collection with which the poet launched his career. When these selections are taken together, Alison's Ovid comes alive; the Roman poet's great ability to perform contemporary themes through mythical subject matter, and vice versa, is Alison's guiding principle and Muse. Change Me will transform forever readers' experience of this most ingenious of poets. ; 176 pages

25 Alvis, John DIVINE PURPOSE AND HEROIC RESPONSE IN HOMER AND VIRGIL The Political Plan in Zeus
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers 1995 0847680142 / 9780847680146 Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket
Top corners are lightly bumped else NF; Taking a critical perspective more political than that usually adopted by classicists, John Alvis demonstrates in this study that the "Iliad, Odyssey" and "Aeneid" each present a distinct political teaching regarding human ends and the form of civil society most conducive to the realization of those ends. Referring to the mysterious "plan of Zeus" announced in the opening lines of the "Iliad" but never explained, Alvis argues that both Homer's Zeus and Virgil's Jupiter guide their heroes to embody principles of natural justice that in turn found political constitutions. "The Political Plan of Zeus" represents the first comprehensive theory of the meaning of Zeus's providence in both Homeric poems, a new interpretation of "the muse" in Homer, and the first attempt to compare the "Aeneid" with Platonic-Aristotelian teaching on the nature of man and the problem of empire. This book will be of interest to upper-level undergraduates and scholars of politics, philosophy, and the classics. ; 9.75 x 1 x 6.75 Inches; 320 pages

28 Anderson, William S. BARBARIAN PLAY Plautus' Roman Comedy
University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division 1996 0802079415 / 9780802079411 Softcover Very Good
Faint creasing to spine. Light shelfwear. Scholar's name to half-title (Robert Brown). ; In this volume William S. Anderson sets Plautus, who wrote Rome's earliest surviving poetry, in his rightful place among the Greek and Roman writers of what we know as New Comedy (fourth to second centuries). Anderson begins by defining major innovations that Plautus made on inherited Greek New Comedy (Menander, Philemon, and Diphilus) , transforming it from romantic domestic drama to a celebration of rollicking family anarchy. He shows how Plautus diminished the traditional importance of love and replaced it with a new major theme: 'heroic badness,' especially embodied in the rogue slave (ancestor of the impudent servant, valet, or maid). Anderson then examines the unique verbal texture of Plautus' drama and demonstrates his revolt against realism, his drive to have his characters defy everyday circumstances and pit their intrepid linguistic wit against social order, their Roman extravagant impudence against Greek self-control. Finally, Anderson explores the special form of metatheatre that we admire in Plautus, by which he undermines the assumptions of his Greek models' and replaces them with a new, confident Roman comedy. ; Robson Classical Lectures; 194 pages

Small bump to base of spine. Scholar's name to table of contents (Robert Brown). Laminate lifting along foreedge of front wrap. ; An annotated edition of Book 1 of Apuleius' novel Metamorphoses, this text is suitable for a student's first unadapted author, or in combination with other readings at the intermediate level. Book 1 exhibits the spontaneity and ebullience of Apuleius' Latin as well as his ability to engage the reader with a lively story. It is the perfect text to put variety into the Latin curriculum. ; 128 pages
