4 Aeschylus; Alan H. Sommerstein (Ed. ) AESCHYLUS: EUMENIDES
Cambridge University Press 1989 0521284309 / 9780521284301 Softcover Very Good
Spine sunned and a bit foxed. Else very light shelfwear. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 324 pages; Sommerstein presents a freshly constituted text, with introduction and commentary, of Eumenides, the climactic play of the only surviving complete Greek tragic trilogy, the Oresteia of Aeschylus. Of all Athenian tragic dramas, Eumenides is most consciously designed to be relevant to the situation of the Athenian state at the time of its performance (458 B.C.) and seems to have contained daring innovations both in technique and in ideas. The introduction and commentary to this edition seek to bring out how Aeschylus shaped to his purpose the legends he inherited, and ended the tragic story of Agamemnon's family in a celebration of Athenian civic unity and justice. The commentary also pays attention to the linguistic, metrical and textual problems to be encountered by the reader.

5 Aeschylus; Mark Griffith (Ed. ) AESCHYLUS: PROMETHEUS BOUND
Cambridge University Press 1983 0521270111 / 9780521270113 Softcover Very Good
Spine a bit sunned. Light shelfwear. Pages lightly tanned. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 328 pages; The myth of fire stolen from the gods appears in many pre-industrial societies. In Greek culture Prometheus the fire-stealer figures prominently in the poems of Hesiod, but in Prometheus Bound Hesiod's morality tale has been transformed into a drama of tragic tone and proportions. In the introduction, Mark Griffith examines how the dramatist has achieved this transformation, looking at the play from all angles - plot and characters, dramatic technique, style and metre. He includes a short section on the production of the play and on the questions of authenticity and date. The commentary guides the reader through problems of language, metre and content. An important feature of this volume is the appendix, which gathers together the existing fragments of the other two plays in the supposed Prometheus trilogy, quoting them in full in the original language and in translation, with short accompanying commentary. This is suitable for undergraduates and students in the upper forms of schools. It also deserves the serious attention of scholars. The introduction requires no knowledge of Greek and will interest students of drama and literature in other cultures too.

His six surviving works all concern homicide cases. Andocides (ca. 440-390) was involved in two religious scandals—the mutilation of the Herms (busts of Hermes) and the revelation of the Eleusinian Mysteries—on the eve of the fateful Athenian expedition to Sicily in 415. 18 Ashton, Sally-Ann PETRIE'S PTOLEMAIC AND ROMAN MEMPHIS
Institute of Archaeology, University College London 2003 0905853407 / 9780905853406 Softcover Very Good
Pencil marginalia to some pages. Includes cd in back sleeve. Minor creasing to wraps and base of spine. ; Memphis was one of the great melting pots of Mediterranean and African culture during the reigns of the heirs of Alexander and under the Roman Empire, a vibrant and complex community well after the end of the age of its ancient Pharaonic founders. For too long, its importance during this critical period has been wrongly eclipsed by the younger city of Alexandria. This book challenges such assumptions by taking a closer look at Memphis through the lens of the rich material excavated there by Flinders Petrie over a century ago, and exhibited in University College London’s Petrie Museum. These finds bring alive the diversity of the city’s inhabitants and raise questions, still relevant today, about the representations and realities of ethnic groups. This book presents the excavation background to the finds, their manufacturing processes and their cultural implications. It is accompanied by a CD ROM that illustrates this informative and neglected material. ; UCL Institute of Archaeology Publications; 120 pages
