The purpose of the book is to introduce the reader to the vernacular literature of Germany from the 8th century to the works of Notker (11th century). There is also a chapter on two Latin works ( Waitharius and Ruodlieb) which may be regarded as learned offshoots of the vernacular tradition. Most of the works of the period demand a strict philological treatment, but an aesthetic evaluation is attempted for such works as the Old Saxon biblical epics, the minor Old High German religious poems, and the unique masterpiece the Hildebrandslied.

Blackwell Publishers 2004 0631181857 / 9780631181859 Hardcover Near Fine with no dust jacket
Minor bumping to top corners. ; Between the end of Roman rule in the early fifth century and the Arab conquest in the eighth, Spain's destiny lay with the Visigoths, a confederacy of different ethnic groups formed in the Balkans in the later fourth century. Taking account of important new documentary evidence and of the latest archaeological findings, the author presents a wealth of original theories, challenging many traditional assumptions about Visigothic Spain about how the Visigothic kingdom was governed, law in the kingdom, the nature and methods of the Arab conquest, and the rise of Spain as an intellectual force in the West. The book falls into two parts: the first providing a chronological overview of political and military events; the second reviewing the evidence for social life and organization in Visigothic Spain. A historiographical introduction summarizes the current state of research on the history and archaeology of the period. ; A History of Spain; 272 pages

Franz Steiner Verlag 2009 3515093877 / 9783515093873 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Historia - Einzelschriften 209; 337 pages; The historiographical representation of organizations of the urban Roman people reflects the growth of knowledge of German ancient history since the mid-19th Century, as well as the zeitgeist-directed conditions of research and reflection. The author transposes a historical and theoretical disciplinary matrix (Rusen / Blanken) to a subject of ancient history and brings historical culture and social practice into systematic context, showing alternating and coexisting historical paradigms. By including the semantic dimension of research contributions into the scientific and historical reconstruction, language and thought patterns of researchers become transparent. The observation of knowledge-guiding metaphors and the analysis of narrative style allow for a peak behind the scenes of guiding principles. German text.

33 Fox, Denton & Hermann Palsson GRETTIR'S SAGA
University of Toronto Press 2001 0802061656 / 9780802061652 Softcover Good+
Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. Wraps are protected in plastic that has been pasted down else VG. ; 0.65 x 8.98 x 5.62 Inches; 195 pages; PRofound and intriguing, Grettir's Saga is the last of the great Icelandic sagas. It tells of the life and death of Grettir, a great rebel, individualist, and romantic hero viewed unromantically. Grettir spends his childhood violently defying authority: as a youth of sixteen he kills a man and is outlawed; all the rest of his life he devotes, with remarkable composure, to fighting more and more formidable enemies. He pits himself against bears, berserks, wraiths, trolls, and finally, it seems, the whole population of Iceland. Yet he is not a bloodthirsty killer, but only a man who is totally unwilling to compromise. As a result of his desire for freedom, he becomes increasingly isolated, although he wishes to live in society, and indeed can hardly bear solitude. Driven back and forth from Iceland to Norway, harried around Iceland, he continually flees subjection and confinement only to find a perilous freedom beset both by the external hazards of a new land and by the internal hazards of loneliness and pride. He escapes to freedom and finds destruction. He finally meets his death in his last refuge on the top of an unscalable island near the northern tip of Iceland. Grettir's Saga has several themes. One of them is the conflict between the Christian world and the survival of the pagan world, as sorcery or heroic pride; the other is the conflict between man's desire for individual freedom and the restrictive bond imposed by society. This translation is the first into English since 1914; it is based on a more accurate Icelandic text than the earlier translations, and, unlike them, is unexpurgated and in unarchaic English. The saga has an especial modern relevance - a recent translation into Czech reached the top of the best-seller list. The present volume includes genealogies, a study of the legal system, and a critical assessment of the work.

Goths, Burgundians, and other aliens were accommodated within the provinces without disrupting the settled population or overturning the pattens of landownership. Goffart examines these arrangements and shows that they were based on the procedures of Roman taxation, rather than on those of military billeting (the so-called hospitalitas system) as has been long thought. ; 278 pages

42 Heather, P. J. GOTHS AND ROMANS 332-489
Oxford University Press, USA 1992 0198202342 / 9780198202349 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket
Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Minor bumping to back top corner of book. ; This is a scholarly study of the collision of Goths and Romans in the fourth and fifth centuries. Gothic tribes played a major role in the destruction of the western half of the Roman Empire between 350 and 500, establishing successor kingdoms in southern France and Spain (the Visigoths) , andin Italy (the Ostrogoths). Our historical understanding of this `Migration Period' has been based upon the Gothic historian Jordanes, whose mid-sixth-century Getica suggests that the Visigoths and Ostrogoths entered the Empire already established as coherent groups and simply conquered new territories. Using the availablecontemporary sources, Peter Heather is able to show that, on the contrary, the Visigoths and Ostrogoths were new and unprecedentedly large social groupings at this time, and that many Gothic societies failed even to survive the upheavals of the Migration Period. Dr Heather's scholarly study explores the development of Visigothic and Ostrogothic societies, their rise to power, and the complicated interactions with the Romans which helped bring about the fall of the Roman Empire. ; Oxford Historical Monographs; 1.18 x 8.8 x 5.8 Inches; 396 pages

45 Heather, Peter THE VISIGOTHS FROM THE MIGRATION PERIOD TO THE SEVENTH CENTURY An Ethnographic Perspective
Boydell Press 1999 0851157629 / 9780851157627 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Dustjacket has very minor rubbing. ; Studies in Historical Archaeoethnology; 1.8 x 9.77 x 6.98 Inches; 488 pages; Between 376 and 476 the Roman Empire in western Europe was dismantled by aggressive outsiders, `barbarians' as the Romans labelled them. Chief among these were the Visigoths, a new force of previously separate Gothic and other groups from south-west France, initially settled by the Romans but subsequently, from the middle of the fifth century, achieving total independence from the failing Roman Empire, and extending their power from the Loire to the Straits of Gibraltar. These studies draw on literary and archaeological evidence to address important questions thrown up by the history of the Visigoths and of the kingdom they generated: the historical processes which led to their initial creation; the emergence of the Visigothic kingdom in the fifth century; and the government, society, culture and economy of the `mature' kingdom of the sixth and seventh centuries. A valuable feature of the collection, reflecting the switch of the centre of the Visigothic kingdom from France to Spain from the beginning of the sixth century, is the inclusion, in English, of current Spanish scholarship. Contributors: Dennis Green, Peter Heather, Ana Maria Jiménex Garnica, Giorgio Ausenda, Ian Wood, Isabel Velázquez, Felix Retamero, Pablo C. Díaz, Mayke De Jong, Gisela Ripoll López, Andreas Schwarcz.
