147 Bookidis, Nancy CORINTH: THE SANCTUARY OF DEMETER AND KORE The Terracotta Sculpture
American School of Classical Studies 2010 0876611854 / 9780876611852 Hardcover Fine in Very Good dust jacket
Long Scratch to front panel of DJ (about 5-6 cm) else no other faults. ; Corinth Volume XVIII.5; 315 pages; The fifth part of the Corinth volume dedicated to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore publishes the large-scale terracotta sculpture found in the sanctuary. Ranging in date from the late 7th through the 4th century B.C., the sculpture consists of fragments from 132 to as many as 147 statues, from half- to nearly life-size. These are, for the most part, statues of young males, both draped and nude, although females and seated infants appear as well. Several introductory chapters discuss the types represented, the findspots and possible original placement of the sculptures, and the techniques involved in their construction. This volume greatly expands our knowledge of the history of Corinth, broadening our understanding both of cult practices at the site and of the manufacture of terracotta sculpture.

150 Bowden, William EPIRUS VETUS The Archaeology of a Late Antique Province
Duckworth 2003 0715631160 / 9780715631164 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Book is fine. DJ is protected in mylar sleeve. ; The land that once formed the late antique Roman province of Epirus Vetus now straddles the border between Albania and Greece, a volatile area whose history since the Second World War has meant that modern political boundaries rather than those of antiquity have defined study of the ancient province. In this readable, well illustrated account, William Bowden reassesses the archaeological evidence from the fourth to the seventh century AD, when the area changed from a Roman province to a distant region beyond the limits of the empire, using the data to construct a model of the changing social structures that underlay this important transition. His analysis reveals that these changes were not gradual transformations but rather a series of sharply defined discontinuities, and suggests that these processes resulted in a more fragmented society, in which groups coalesced around individuals rather than concepts of town or state. The book also examines the controversial issue of Slavic settlement in the area in the immediate post-Roman period, a subject that even today remains dominated by the questions of nationalism and ethnic identity that have recently had such tragic consequences in the Balkans. ; Duckworth Archaeology; 256 pages

This is the story of man's restoration of Pompeii to the world from the earliest excavations to the most recent soundings. Each step of the archaeological history brought about a clearer picture of life as it was. The discoveries also had their impact on the times -- "Pompeian fever" swept 18th and 19th century Europe. This is also the story of the men who dominated the digs -- the initial probings of Prince d'Elbeuf, the adventures -- amorous and otherwise -- of the Hamiltons, and of the dedicated Italians such as Fiorelli and Spinazzola who eventually brought systematic order to the digs. As a pictorial reinforcement to the text, the book presents a display of views and overviews, reconstructions and artistic interpretations, line drawings and etchings, engravings, vintage photography, and contemporary photographs.

Pennsylvania State University Press 1993 0271008253 / 9780271008257 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Corners are bumped else NF. Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing. Dustjacket has edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small closed tears along bottom edge. ; The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome Volume XXXVII; 431 pages; Cosa was a Latin colonia founded under Roman influence in southwestern Tuscany in 273 BC, perhaps on land confiscated from the Etruscans. One of the last textual references to Cosa comes from the work of Rutilius Claudius Namatianus in his De reditu suo. In the passage 1.285-90, Rutilius remarks that by 416 the site of Cosa was deserted and could be seen to be in ruins. In the 20th century, Cosa was the site of excavations carried out under the auspices of the American Academy in Rome, initially under the direction of the archaeologist Frank Edward Brown. Excavations (1948-54, 1965-72) have traced the city plan, the principal buildings, the port, and have uncovered the Arx, the forum, and a number of houses. Unexcavated buildings include a bathing establishment, but no trace of a theater or an amphitheater has been found. In the 1990s a limited series of excavations were carried out under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress, then associated with the American Academy in Rome. This latter campaign aimed at understanding the history of the site between the imperial period and the middle agest. Sample excavations took place over the whole site, with larger excavations on the Arx, the Eastern Height and around the Forum.
