Clarkson N. Potter Distributed By Crown Publishers 1979 0517538598 / 9780517538593 Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good- dust jacket
Very light shelfwear with former owner's name to ffep else book is fine. DJ has light edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small tears. ; An Official Publication of the American Museum of Natural History, New York; 305 pages; Oversized. This is the story of man's restoration of Pompeii to the world from the earliest excavations to the most recent soundings. Each step of the archaeological history brought about a clearer picture of life as it was. The discoveries also had their impact on the times -- "Pompeian fever" swept 18th and 19th century Europe. This is also the story of the men who dominated the digs -- the initial probings of Prince d'Elbeuf, the adventures -- amorous and otherwise -- of the Hamiltons, and of the dedicated Italians such as Fiorelli and Spinazzola who eventually brought systematic order to the digs. As a pictorial reinforcement to the text, the book presents a display of views and overviews, reconstructions and artistic interpretations, line drawings and etchings, engravings, vintage photography, and contemporary photographs.

Corners are bumped else NF. Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing. Dustjacket has edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small closed tears along bottom edge. ; The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome Volume XXXVII; 431 pages; Cosa was a Latin colonia founded under Roman influence in southwestern Tuscany in 273 BC, perhaps on land confiscated from the Etruscans. One of the last textual references to Cosa comes from the work of Rutilius Claudius Namatianus in his De reditu suo. In the passage 1.285-90, Rutilius remarks that by 416 the site of Cosa was deserted and could be seen to be in ruins. In the 20th century, Cosa was the site of excavations carried out under the auspices of the American Academy in Rome, initially under the direction of the archaeologist Frank Edward Brown. Excavations (1948-54, 1965-72) have traced the city plan, the principal buildings, the port, and have uncovered the Arx, the forum, and a number of houses. Unexcavated buildings include a bathing establishment, but no trace of a theater or an amphitheater has been found. In the 1990s a limited series of excavations were carried out under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress, then associated with the American Academy in Rome. This latter campaign aimed at understanding the history of the site between the imperial period and the middle agest. Sample excavations took place over the whole site, with larger excavations on the Arx, the Eastern Height and around the Forum.

178 Butzer, Karl W. ARCHAEOLOGY AS HUMAN ECOLOGY Method and Theory for a Contextual Approach
Cambridge University Press 1982 0521246520 / 9780521246521 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket
Minor shelfwear. Former owner's name on ffep. DJ spine a bit sunned. ; Xiii, 364pp, illustrated. Archaeology as Human Ecology is a new introduction to concepts and methods in archaeology. It deals not with artifacts, but with sites, settlements, and subsistence. Karl W. Butzer's goal is to interpret the ecosystem of which an archaeologicial site or site network was part. Components of this study include geo-archaeology, archaeobotany, zoo-archaeology, and archaeometry. These methods are then used in examining interactions between human communities and their biophysical environment: the impact of settlement on site formation and the effects of subsistence activities on plants, animals, soils, and overall landscape modification. Finally, the methods and theoretical approach, are applied to examine the processes of cultural change and continuity. The approach of Archaeology as Human Ecology goes far beyond traditional environmental archaeology, which is concerned with simple reconstruction. It provides a clear, systemic approach that immediately allows an assessment of interactions. For the first time, it attempts to develop a comprehensive spatial archaeology - one that is far more than derivative spatial analysis. ; 364 pages

188 Castriota, David THE ARA PACIS AUGUSTAE And the Imagery of Abundance in Later Greek and Early Roman Imperial Art
Princeton University Press 1995 0691037159 / 9780691037158 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Very light shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 344 pages; David Castriota examines one of the most important monuments of early Roman Imperial art, the Ara Pacis Augustae, the sculptured marble altar built to celebrate the peace, prosperity, and stability initiated by the reign of Augustus in the later first century B.C. Castriota argues that the floral decoration of the altar enclosure was profoundly significant, operating as a visual counterpart to the technique of metonymy in language. It utilised an array of realistic plants and flowers as allusive elements associated with various gods and goddesses, which together symbolised the support and blessing of the Roman divinities for the Augustan regime. Supporting his argument with evidence from Greek and Roman literature and religion, Castriota shows that the planners of the Ara Pacis adapted and expanded a long tradition of symbolic floral decoration from Greek monumental arts. Throughout his work, Castriota demonstrates that the Roman absorption of Greek precedent enabled viewers to recognise the intended message of divine sponsorship. By examining the origins of the Ara Pacis within its broader historical setting, the author provides new insights into a crucial period that witnessed the emergence of a distinctly Roman Imperial art.
