Very slight crease to top of spine. ; BAR International Series 645; 71 pages; Was the decline of Rome and the fall of the western Empire partly the consequence of declining troop numbers? This is one of the questions which Coello asks. Although there is some documentary evidence for unit sizes in the early period very little is known about the third century and following. Coello examines the evidence for the later period but although some misconceptions are exposed there is little new evidence available to shed any real light.

104 Cohen, Ada THE ALEXANDER MOSAIC Stories of Victory and Defeat
Cambridge University Press 2000 0521775434 / 9780521775434 Softcover Very Good+
Spine a little discolored. Very light shelfwear. ; Cambridge Studies in Classical Art and Iconography; 302 pages; The Alexander Mosaic: Stories of Victory and Defeat focuses on one of the richest, most complex and visually stunning monuments of classical antiquity. Contributing to a vast tradition of scholarship, which dates back to the discovery of the Mosaic in 1831, Cohen here engages with, but departs from, a core of positivist assumptions that characterize this body of literature. In this study, she examines the Mosaic as it may have functioned in two different contexts, first as a Greek painting of the fourth century B.C., and then as a Roman mosaic of ca. 100 B.C.

106 Conwell, David H. CONNECTING A CITY TO THE SEA The History of the Athenian Long Walls
Brill Academic Publishers 2008 9004162321 / 9789004162327 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Unwrapped in Plastic. ; The Long Walls joining Athens with its harbors are universally recognized as symbols of naval imperialism and the lynchpin of a radical departure from traditional Greek military strategy during the later fifth century B. C. Nevertheless, many important questions about the structures remain disputed or simply neglected. As the first comprehensive history of the Long Walls, the present study dates each construction phase, examines the function of the structures from beginning to end, and chronicles their fluctuating viability. The analysis is driven by the proposition that the Athenians would not have relied on the walls to the sea when their navy did not control the sea lanes effectively. This full consideration of the Long Walls' development and strategic prominence over time will enable accurate assessment of their position in Greek military and political history from classical through early Hellenistic times.; History and Archaeology of Classical Antiquity; 0.8 x 9.6 x 6.5 Inches; 267 pages

115 Cotterell CHARIOT The Astounding Rise and Fall of the World's First War Machine
Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Narrating the development and disappearance of the world's first war machine, this book reminds readers that much of the power of ancient empires was two-wheeled and horse-driven. Harnessed to other historians' broad-spectrum research on the causes of the end of the Bronze Age, Cotterell argues that, much like the later introduction of the stirrup, chariot technology dramatically recast battlefield strategy across the ancient world. Egyptians employed chariots as all-purpose fighting machines, while Roman chariots were more ceremonial, and Indian troops used theirs as archery platforms; Chinese engineers developed more efficient harnesses, permitting heavier cars. The author's comparative approach broadens the appeal of what would otherwise seem a narrow topic, but this account nevertheless behaves as a detailed military history. Particularly interesting for such scholarship, the author also discusses the chariot as a vehicle for modern popular culture; it aims to dispel the notion that chariots were simply horse-pulled tanks. Scholarly yet accessible, ; 344 pages
