11 Alvis, John DIVINE PURPOSE AND HEROIC RESPONSE IN HOMER AND VIRGIL The Political Plan in Zeus
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers 1995 0847680142 / 9780847680146 Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket
Top corners are lightly bumped else NF; Taking a critical perspective more political than that usually adopted by classicists, John Alvis demonstrates in this study that the "Iliad, Odyssey" and "Aeneid" each present a distinct political teaching regarding human ends and the form of civil society most conducive to the realization of those ends. Referring to the mysterious "plan of Zeus" announced in the opening lines of the "Iliad" but never explained, Alvis argues that both Homer's Zeus and Virgil's Jupiter guide their heroes to embody principles of natural justice that in turn found political constitutions. "The Political Plan of Zeus" represents the first comprehensive theory of the meaning of Zeus's providence in both Homeric poems, a new interpretation of "the muse" in Homer, and the first attempt to compare the "Aeneid" with Platonic-Aristotelian teaching on the nature of man and the problem of empire. This book will be of interest to upper-level undergraduates and scholars of politics, philosophy, and the classics. ; 9.75 x 1 x 6.75 Inches; 320 pages

18 Augoustakis, Antony (Ed. ) RITUAL AND RELIGION IN FLAVIAN EPIC
Oxford University Press 2013 0199644098 / 9780199644094 Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Book is fine. DJ has 1 small tear (1 cm) to lower rear corner and very light shelfwear. ; This edited collection addresses the role of ritual representations and religion in the epic poems of the Flavian period (69-96 CE) : Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Silius Italicus' Punica, Statius' Thebaid, and the unfinished Achilleid. Drawing on various modern studies on religion and ritual, and the relationship between literature and religion in the Greco-Roman world, it explores how we can interpret the poets' use of the relationship between gods and humans, cults and rituals, religious activities, and the role of the seer / prophet and his identification with poetry. Divided into three major sections, the volume includes essays on the most important religious activities (prophecy or augury, prayers and hymns) and the relationship between religion and political power under the Flavian emperors. It also addresses specific episodes in Flavian epic which focus on religious activities associated with the dead and the Underworld, such as purification, necromancy, katabasis, suicide, and burial. It finally explores the role of gender in ritual and religion. ; 432 pages

25 Baltussen, Hans (Ed. ) GREEK AND ROMAN CONSOLATIONS Eight Studies of a Tradition and its Afterlife
The Classical Press of Wales 2013 1905125569 / 9781905125562 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket
1 upper corner lightly bumped. Minor rubbing to corners of DJ. ; In the Ancient World death came - on average - at a far earlier age than in today's West, and without the authoritative warnings given by modern medicine. Consolation for the trauma of loss had, accordingly, a more prominent role to play. This volume presents eight original studies on consolatory writings from ancient Greek, Roman, early Christian and Arabic societies. The authors include internationally recognised authorities in the field. They offer insight into the ancient experience of loss and the methods used to palliate it. They explore how far there was a consolatory 'genre', involving letters, funerary oratory, epicedia, and philosophical prose. Focusing on responses to grief in numerous ancient authors, this volume finds elements of continuity and of individual variety in modes of consolation, and reveals instructive tensions between the commonplace and the personal. ; 232 pages

26 Barré, Michael L. (Barre) THE GOD-LIST IN THE TREATY BETWEEN HANNIBAL AND PHILIP V OF MACEDONIA A Study in Light of the Ancient Near Eastern Treaty Tradition
The Johns Hopkins University Press 1983 0801827876 / 9780801827877 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Bumping to top corners and textblock. Minor edgewear to extremities. Former owner's name on ffep. ; In 215 BC in the second Punic War, Philip V of Macedonia sent an emissary to Hannibal in order to form an alliance with the Carthaginian general. This alliance was formalized in a treaty, the document which provides the corpus for this study. In this treaty is a list of "divine witnesses", which comprise the "official pantheon" of Carthage. The organization of the material and the presentation of the god-lists of all the treaties in a series of charts in Appendix I as well as the extensive indexes and bibliography make the book a useful reference work. Any further treatment of West Semitic pantheons will have to take this study seriously and all who are interested in Near Eastern religion will consult this work with great profit. ; The Johns Hopkins Near Eastern Studies; 10.5 x 0.75 x 7.25 Inches; 236 pages

Very light shelfwear else Fine. ; BAR International Series 1220; 153 pages; The Greek and Roman year were divided into festivals and games even more than our year is today. Politics and competition went together and the spectacle and even danger of games and sports spiced up the lives of Greek and Roman citizens. This volume presents fourteen papers, half of which originated at a conference held in Edinburgh in 2000, which examine the archaeological, material and documentary evidence for ancient sports and festivals, making comparison between Greek and Roman habits and placing the events in their political and religious setting. Subjects include: Minoan bull sports; the evidence of dance imagery; Pindar; chariot racing and politics in 5th-century Athens and Sophocles' Electra; competitive Greek games; Dionysiac festivals in Aristophanes' Acharnians; cock fighting and dicing in classical Athens; the festival of Artemis Leukophyrene; Roman games and Greek origins in Dionysius of Halicarnassus; epic and real games in Statius and Virgil; Roman naumachiae or naval battles in artifical basins; Dionysiac scenes on Oinophoroi vessels from Sagalassos; Christianising the celebrations of death in Late Antiquity; the portraits of champions in Palazzo Te.

Brill Academic Publishers 2006 9004152423 / 9789004152427 Hardcover Fine with no dust jacket
Unwrapped in plastic. ; Culture and History of the Ancient Near East; 11.25 x 1 x 8.5 Inches; 438 pages; This volume explores the Iron Age Phrygian rock-cut monuments in Anatolia and defines their role in religion. Among other features this book questions the traditional view of the Mother goddess Kybele being the only Phrygian deity. A detailed analysis based on the monuments provides new interpretations and aspects of Phrygian religion: the Mother goddess was not alone, but rather accompanied by a Superior male god. For the first time all known Phrygian rock-cut monuments are brought together in the useful corpus with plenty of illustrations. It is a unique and significant contribution to the study of Phrygian religion and spatial conceptualization and is useful both for those interested in Anatolian culture and archaeology but also in fields such as classical religion and archaeology.

40 Blok, Josine H. THE EARLY AMAZONS Modern and Ancient Perspectives on a Persistent Myth
E. J. Brill 1995 9004100776 / 9789004100770 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
Front upper corner bumped and a bit creased. Else light shelfwear. ; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World; 473 pages; The Early Amazons offers a new understanding of the ancient Amazon myth, situating mythical representations in the realm of cultural history. The first section examines how the Amazons have presented a challenge to views on history, myth and gender in classical mythology from the late eighteenth century up to the impact of structuralism. Topics included are nineteenth-century historiography and the interest in linguistics. The second section sheds new light on the culture of archaic Greece, offering a coherent assessment of literary and visual representations. Taking mythical narrative as a form of oral storytelling, it shows the emergence of the Amazon motif and its meaning in the world of epic. Iconographical analysis reveals how the visual arts have made a contribution of their own to the imaginary presence of the Amazons.

43 Bowersock, Glen W. HELLENISM IN LATE ANTIQUITY
University of Michigan Press 1990 0472094181 / 9780472094189 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; Thomas Spencer Jerome Lectures; 0.5 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 132 pages; The extraordinary adaptability and durability of Greek culture in times of momentous change is revealed in this book, as G. W. Bowersock seeks to interpret Hellenism in a predominantly Christian world. In this effort he sheds new light on a late paganism that has often been seen as moribund and shows it to have been unexpectedly vigorous. Hellenism, comprising the language, thought, mythology, and images of the Greeks, contributed fundamentally to the evolution of early Christianity. It had spread across the lands of the Eastern Mediterranean for many centuries before Constantine established Christianity as the official religion of the Byzantine government. But Hellenism served no less to disseminate and strengthen paganism--a role that has hitherto been little appreciated or studied. The local traditions of Asia Minor, Egypt, and the Near East survived in most cases by sharing common forms of expression with the Christians. Hellenism clearly allowed late pagans of widely differing traditions to communicate with each other. At the same time it gave to both Christianity and Islam a pagan context that enjoyed much greater public recognition then than now. And so the author shows that Hellenism illuminates the wholeness of the late antique world in the East, the interaction of its paganism and its Christianity. Dionysus and Christ flourished together. . .
